Casino will not be open, earliest possible opening maybe late july, maybe?

Also, when the casino reopens, won't be much there.
The old casino has been converted into a lobby bar,
the new casino will occupy a very, very small part of it's old space.

Honestly, without the casino, it's boring....

The resort will officially change it's name, November 1.

That's when many renovations are completed that Barcelo demanded, before they
put their name on the building..

The sales dept is gone, no representation on the island.

Barcelo is new to timeshares, we're last on their list.

Rising maintenance fees and All inclusive rates, not good for owners.

The last time we visited (April, 2015) we went into the casino at the Occidental. It looked like they weren't even using some of the space in the back. I seem to remember a DJ, but back in the corner, and machines seemed to be more spread out than at other places. It wasn't busy, and I haven't seen it busy in quite a few years.

The Occidental felt very "cold" towards those not staying on property. I once wanted to go into the shops, but the security guard wasn't going to let me because I didn't have their wristband. I had to talk to a hotel employee to get them to let me spend money at their hotel. We were also questioned one night when walking onto the property to go to the casino.

I hope they become more welcoming with the change. Even though I may not be staying at your property, I still may spend money at your restaurant, bar, shops or casino.

If I was treated like that, I doubt there would be anything on their property I would spend money on including their bar, restaurant or casino. Security can and should be handled in a personable, courteous manner. Just reading of your experience makes me not want to go there.

I went to the Occidental casino MANY years ago and thought it was very small and there was NOBODY there but me and a couple of other folks....I quickly left and never returned.

They made me feel like I was doing something wrong.
We'll give it a try once they have new ownership/management.

Andrea, all inclusive for timeshares are based on when it was purchased.

All contracts prior to 2003, were optional, after 2003 most contracts mandatory.
A major issue, if you own optional, it could be difficult getting reservation, regardless
of the hotel occupancy!! sad but true..

The security is strict, you're not allowed to walk past lobby into elevator area, pool area, etc..
I welcome that policy, keeps others out of the actual hotel hallways and elevators.

Security tightened after Natalie Holloway, since the first arrest was a security guard from the resort..

As for spending money there, don't worry you won't, they don't accept any cash
from guests of the resort or outsiders.

The casino, unfortunately has been a disappointment for the last 6 years.
new ownership, paid employees late, bounced checks and didn't pay the rent.

That casino at one time was packed nightly, when certain managers left,
due to new ownership, it plummeted..

One thing hasn't changed, love that resort, 25 years.....
