We've stayed at the HI for most of our visits. We stayed at the Americana on our honeymoon in '89 and once at the Marriott when we found a great deal through an airline. But that was many moons ago. I think everyone is correct in that the HI is not a pricey, luxury property. However, it is in a great location, has a great beach and nice rooms. In terms of price, you have to look comparitively at what you get for what you pay. And does anyone feel, like me, there is a difference in the people who repeatedly visit the island and those visiting for a first or second time? I think those who repeatedly return to the island go for the island itself, the sea, the beaches and the people, not necessarily a luxury resort that can be obtain in any of hundreds of other locations. The first or second timer may still have the need for the ultimate vacation experience. I just want to be there. I don't use the room much, I'd sleep on the beach if I were permitted.

Thanks for pointing that out Lisa. The maintenance fee at the Surf Club this year is about $1,300 for a Oceanfront 2BR villa due to high energy costs on the island. Sometimes you can get a legit bargain if the owner needs to rent the week because they can't go-especially if it's a last minute thing.
As an owner, I would want to at least cover my annual maintenance fee if I were renting to break even. Luckily we have been able to use our week every year since buying.

... and lucky are those who can find an airfare to go along with that bargain.

Well, i caved. I couldn't stand the idea of not going this year. The hotel prices came down and i was able to get a standard room at the Marriott for $193 plus tax. I am hoping to get upgraded, since i am Gold Rewards. If not, no biggie, i dont spend much time in the room anyway. Of course , by the time the hotel prices came down, the airfare went up. I found it cheaper to go out (from JFK) on a Tuesday, and return on a Thursday so instead of 11 nights, I'm staying 9. Otherwise it would just be too much money. Paid $1400 for 2 round trip non stops. (Jetblue) . A week later the price for the same flights was $1768.
Crazy. Weird thing is, when i looked at the seating plan and chose my seats, the flights looked wide open.
Just thought i'd update, since i started this thread.

I found some old receipts from when I used to visit Aruba, going back as far as '95 and some in 2002, before I bought my shack here. Things have definitely increased in price. Of course, that's a long time frame.

More recently, in the past couple of years, I've noticed restaurants getting VERY expensive, and this a concern because even if you get a good deal to stay and skip the car, you still HAVE TO EAT!

At any rate, I'm seriously thinking about building some bungalows on the back 40 here in Savaneta. Won't be fancy, but will be comfortable, and tranquil. Of course, you have to like cats. Oh, and I have some chickens, now, too. Not the brightest of God's creatures... but good eatin'.

Aurbalisa: I know how close you and Andrea are; also what terrific Monitors you both are. That being said, I know that neither one of you would be disturbed if the other disagreed. I love all the comments and recommendations that you both so freely give to the "Forum."

    Thank you.

have been watching flights for our annual trip in november and I actually see no difference...we try to keep the flights in the 500 dollar range and right now they are at or near that price...so for the flights I see not much of a difference
as for the rest, I do not believe we as tourists are being gouged....I believe it is reasonable to see prices go up year over year just as they do here......considering everything is flown in, it is surprising that the costs are not more than they are.
I do however agree with Andrea that for some reason Americans and the work "rich" seem to be lumped together.....a good friend of ours from aruba used to think we had more money than we knew what to do with....before I explained that I have to save throughout the year to have enough money to "throw" around when we get there....
