Tonight my heart is heavy and to all my American friends I express a sympathy about this and all those other shootings that have happened. This is far too complex an issue to simply preach gun control or other possible solutions.

Society today places so many pressures on all of us. There is a meanness that has developed in our day - to -day living. The pressures of legislated issues, such as taxes and laws and conditions, coupled with financial pressures from banks and other institutions make life that much more complicated. Life is no longer relaxed. We are all under pressures. Is this we really want life to be?? I personally think that the reason many of us enjoy Aruba is due to the fact that for a week or two, we can all try to forget these pressures of life at home.

Thinking back to the past concept of the human family, we had defined roles of mother, father and elders and were shielded from many of the technical and societal challenges of today. That has all changed..

I am sure that the indiviual who committed this terrible atrocity was sick. Did this come about as a person who could not cope in todays complex society? If so, why did those around him not see it and seek help?

Too many questions. The fact remains that this is a sad and distressful day, not just for Americans but for all.

    John

And the guns were purchased legally by Lanza's mom, a teacher. My wife is an elementary teacher too.... what does a teacher need high capicity handguns for? I could go on..... but I'm already starting to sound too much like the media with the speculation and theories......

Life is far too short as we learned the hard way again today.
We as citizens in this human race need to put aside our petty differences and work for the betterment of our children and our neighbors/fellow man near and far.
We need to strive to be a kinder and more accepting society.
We have far to little time on this earth.

John mentioned meanness and Lisa mentioned videogames and impulsive behaviors. We all have thoughts and again I encourage you to
give your thoughts here. Rambling is good!

Let us honor those whose lives have been lost by violence by trying to make this very small world a better place.

I agree with CP. What possible reason could you need an assault rifle for? They lived in this New England town who had one violent crime in a year. And why would she need more than one gun? Its not like she lived in a border town.

I live in CT, about 40 miles away from Newtown. I cannot even begin to describe how I feel. I've been crying nonstop since hearing about this yesterday.

Local news reports are confirming that the shooter had some type of mental illness or disability. He shot his mom in the face at her home before heading to the school.

Newtown is a sleepy little community. My prayers go out to the first responders, family, friends, victims, students, and community of Newtown.

    God bless every one.

This just gets sadder and sadder. I agree with Andrea and everyone else life is too short we need to respect and love one another. No one's life is perfect we all have issues and problems at times we need to seek help from loved ones or professionals if it gets to that point. I feel for all the victim's families and the other children who I pray are going to cope. I also feel so bad for all first responders, my husband who is a retired city firegifghter once told me the hardest part of his job was when a small child or baby passed away so I pray the first responders will be able to cope and get the help needed. I also hope the media gives the victim's families the space and privacy they need and deserve at this terrible time.

Lt. Paul Vance of the CT State Police is doing an awesome job controlling this incident. He has a state trooper staying with each family that lost someone in this horrific tragedy so they can have their privacy.

Yes, I liked the idea of the family not having to watch tv in order to get their info/updates. This way they can hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

from a friend from her facebook page
she cannot post on the forum

I am watching the medical examiner try to answer questions. As someone who as been an EMT for 25 years, my heart goes out to him. For the first responders- it was clockwork response, but who is watching for them now? How are they?
Watching this since yesterday, my heart breaks for the families and children who were there. How do you make sense of something like this? Who do you blame, what laws and policies do you question? How do you assure your child that school is safe, that the bad guys won't find THEM. How do you even begin to explain this to a child, let alone a community or the world. That there is a rhyme but some days no reason to what happens in life, but in the end there is a purpose.
    Hold close, love and heal.

I remember doing fire drills in elementary school. I can't imagine the fact that schools now need to do lock down drills. I am trained and teach others how to prepare and treat the worst, hope for the best. The hardest part of teaching is to convey and have the students understand that we treat not just the patient, but the family. Compassion and empathy are as crucial as your treatment plan, but when it is so massive, how do you not get lost in the human loss- innocence, family and community safety.

Heavy hearts around the world. Hopefully they will be made lighter one day by the angels who were sent their wings yesterday, who will one day let our hearts fly and have hope and faith in humanity, that we will know that no event is ever in vain, no matter how hard, our spirit to live and love will always remain.

No matter what religion you draw strength and kindness from, that makes you a better person, take a moment and have faith, remember the love of your family and fellow human.

    I know I am..........
