We've predominantly used TUMI Alpha bags over the years (all are still going strong including the one my company bought for me twenty years ago) - their two-wheelie carry-on is incredible (we each have one). But we've also bought an Eagle Creek Tarmac bag that has turned out to be a favourite as well.

The hard shells are good but they also show every ding and scratch (this goes for low-cost options as well as the expensive Rimowa collections).

Too funny. I literally just got back from buying a three piece set of luggage at the nearby souk. Hard sided but extremely flexible. I'll let you know how it holds up on my next flights. http://tracktravelsystem.com/products.php

We have Samsonite soft sided luggage with spinners-4 wheels that move in all directions that I got either at Kohls or JCPenny several years ago(waited for a sale and used coupons). Like you, I am short (4' 8 1/2") but I can manage the 36" upright-I don't pull it though-I just roll it along side of me, or push it-I put my hand held carry on around the pull handle and go.

I'm a fan of the rolling duffel. Hubby is not. Most of the ones we have used over the years tend to fall forward when standing them upright. I got one I now like when the zipper broke on my then-favorite carry-on, and I had to buy a new one at one of the airport shops. (As I was walking along to my gate, my "personal belongings" were falling out of my bag behind me.).

Neither of us like the type of suitcases that open like books, where you can pack stuff on both sides. You need too much room to open them.

    CRAMABILITY! LOL

I'm surprised and pleased to see so many responses. Who knew there were so many options. The only thing I'm sure about is I want something that has spinners and will standout on the baggage carousel. At the moment I have a baby blue American Tourister that has only seen maybe 10 trips and it's in dire need of replacement.

I think we are in the market for some new luggage too. I keep putting it off. I had a low priced Chaps set from Kohls for a while but it is starting to show its age pretty badly. We have gotten away from the largest size since our last one broke about 2 years ago. I've found that having the medium sized checked bag rather than the large keeps me from having to worry about the weight. At it's fullest, it's around 35 lbs.
I do love our rolling duffle to use for snorkel gear and sunblock and other large liquids, flip flops, and other random items. We bought a cheap Coleman rolling duffle because it was last minute and we just needed something for the fins. The $30 bag has been on 3 round trips so far so I'd say we have gotten more than our money's worth.
Jon wants hard sided, but I'm not so sure.

All of the posts are informative. After reading I decided we needed a new carry on. Off to amazon I went. I needed one that rolls. It is soft sided. Packing for two weeks will be quite a challange for me. I realize I can use the laundry room at Playa Linda so that will be a help.

I am a fan of Samantha Brown luggage, get tons of compliments each time we travel. Compliments from flight attendants, ticket agents and even taxi and shuttle drivers who are men. I am in love with my luggage, spin wheels, lots of compartments etc. Just bought an additional matching piece called the "underseater" cannot believe the compartments in this one. these are all soft sided but have a large hard size for checked luggage. they are all called aqua but I like to say they are "aruba blue". sadly the large one is all marked up but DH says he is going to try to get the marks off with car polish, hope it works. here is a picture of my soft sided pieces. I purchased the cute little flip flop luggage tags on another website. Not sure if any of you ever watched Samantha Brown years ago she had a very nice travel show on t.v. so she knows a lot about luggage as she has traveled the world.

I always enjoyed Samantha Brown's travel show. Didn't realize she had a luggage line! It's nice looking. I'm thinking I'll probably stick with the soft sided. While I've checked out quite a bit on line I really want to get out and take a look at the actual pieces.
