    Mysterious Illness after our trip

I have been hesitant to post about this, but now I'm reaching out to see if anyone has any experience, suggestions or advice that could help us. I apologize if this is graphic.
Towards the end of our trip, Jon started having problems urinating. He had some burning sensation and the sense that he could not go when he needed to.
When we returned home he visited our doctor who ran tests for bacteria and found nothing. They gave an antibiotic just to see if it helped, but nothing. Throughout the week it got worse and he returned for another visit and more tests.
By Christmas Eve he was on the 2nd antibiotic, but feeling worse. Christmas day we spent in the emergency room with a fever and unable to urinate. We were sent home with a catheter. So far tests have revealed no infections, no stones, no tumors, no enlarged prostate, basically no answers.
He had a follow up yesterday and was given some new medication and the catheter was removed. He's had CT scans and sonogram and still no answers, but overall does seem to be improving. We have a list of things to watch for.
We asked about possible causes relating to our trip, or bug bites, or even soap from an older shower dispenser, but so far no answers.
Has anyone had a similar experience, or things we should ask at the doctor?

I thought maybe it started from dehydration due to excessive drinking but he did drink Gatorade most mornings.

If by professionals you mean doctors, then well, they never mentioned it. If you mean every member of our family, I have to say it has come up a time or two.

tracey, i would ask again for them to run another urine culture.

a number of year ago paul had a horrible UTI (we think caused from a pool on a cruise ship)
the first culture came back negative
    the 2nd, positive.

another time, we both tested positive for something called "giardia" and that was after mexico trip (mayan ruins and cozumel)
horrible diarrhea and we were sick as dogs. afer numerous tests and the doctor originally saying it was montezumas revenge and to deal with it, we called our local health dept, explained the situation and they referred us to infectious diseases.
after 2 weeks on flagyl we were cured.

Wow, why would they give an anti; w/o finding out what type of bacteria they are treating. Can it be mrsa in the urine. If so he sensitive to some of the abt they put him on.
Have them do a clean catch too. pee first wipe then pee in a sterile cup.
Go to a uro.. and please keep us updated.
