This has been a growing problem at the Surf Club over the past few years. We have listened to people on the beach talk about getting fake letters claiming they need their dogs for emotional support just so they can bring them to Aruba. The cost is cheaper than leaving them in a kennel for the week. Another couple we met has a dog for emotional support so the SC knew that there is a dog in the unit but their two daughters brought their dogs too for a total of 3 dogs.
My friend got to listen to a dog bark and cry one week, as stated in the article they are not trained service dogs.
For those with significant allergies, the presence of a dog in the room before them can cause a lot of health issues as let's be honest here, the room is never properly cleaned enough to get rid of the allergens properly. To do so would entail washing the carpeting, full bedding, steam clean all upholstery etc. The $250 extra that is paid for a dog in the room is certainly not going to cover those costs nor does the SC cleaning staff have the time to do all of the above.
I am all for legitimate service dogs being allowed but the people who rip off the system, it is just disgraceful!!!

Fake service animals? What the hell is the world coming to? Hey if you need an animal to help you function day to day, I get it. I think it's incredible what some animals can be taught, and if it keeps their owner from freaking out and trying to open the aircraft door at 35,000 feet I'm all for it. But faking it so your dog can go to Aruba? Please...

Bona fide service animals are usually so well disciplined that they almost never cause a disturbance. It should be a simple matter to demand training certificates from those that do cause a rukkus and charge the fakers.

Here's the problem as I see it...
There are bona fide service animals and then there are emotional support animals. The ESA are not generally trained as service dogs. They certainly do provide a "service" to people who need them, no question! The problem has become of too many "fakers" in the ESA category. Doctors will just hand out a letter so someone can take their animal on a plane or hotel. As stated in the article there are companies on the internet who will sell these letters.
These people are causing the whole issue surrounding ESA to get a bad name and rightly so! With respect to the SC, this is becoming a huge problem and it has to stop.

Therein lies the problem. No matter what level of support the animal provides, the level of training necessary for basic discipline should be equal. Now, if only we had the power to change it.

walt my dog is so far from being a trained service animal, she is barely trained........ however given the chance, if she could learn to open the airplane door she would, and then push me out!!

We've had issues with people getting letters from their doctors saying that they need an emotional support animal at our shore condo in NJ. One person requested it-legit medical. Now several owners, who never needed an animal "need" one. We know they are not legit, but we can't prove it. They just don't want to kennel their animal when they come down.

My sister-in-law got a dog and she does need it or at least thinks she does. She has a lot of stress in the past two years-lost her son to leukemia and her marriage dissolved, so she got a dog. She uses him not do to things or takes him everywhere-stores, restaurants, etc. No concern for those who may have pet allergies. He is not trained as in he barks at anything that moves inside or out, including me in my own home if I leave the room and go to the bathroom and she sees nothing wrong it. She has no control over him. She is taking him to Mexico next month. I'm glad I'm not on that plane. I'm not saying she does not need a him(he is so cute), I'm just saying he is not trained as a emotional support dog, he does not listen, barks at everything, but she still takes him everywhere.
