    Vacation from Vacation - Curacao

For our upcoming trip to Aruba in December/January - we were considering doing a Thursday Morning - Saturday Afternoon trip to Curacao. The flights are about $110 round trip and the hotels seem to be in the $200 - $350 range per night.

Being that we own the house in Aruba - we would only have to bring enough clothes for 2 nights and could leave most of our stuff at "home".

Has anyone flown AUA - CUR --- or have any Curacao tips. I dont know much about the Island other than it is bigger and more populated than Aruba and supposedly some of the beaches arent as nice. I have heard there is more shopping and more to see. We would love a change of scenery and go somewhere we have never been.

    Thanks!

MUCH bigger island so lots more to see.

No beach in Curacao is nicer than Aruba. Larger resorts have man-made beaches, public beaches on the leeward coast are mostly coral shards.

Other than sightseeing, I recommend Curacao for diving and snorkeling.

    LOTS more info http://www.aruba.com/forum/tags/curacao.html

check out the tag link that lisa provided.
one of the things that you have to also check out is the airline departure/arrival tax.
your r/t pp at $110 may be considerably more with the tax added in.

we have not been to curacao since 1980 or thereabouts, but imo it is pretty congested and the beaches are not even close to being as nice as aruba.

one my moderating tool is activated, i will place this thread in off topic.
so for those that reported this as being in the wrong category, i will get it moved as soon as the "kink" is worked out by the webmaster

Thanks Lisa and Andrea --- I had heard there is a hidden $40 fee in each ticket that is charged at the airport. We are still deciding if it is worth the time and money. It seems attractive - but in total will add around $800 - $1000 to the cost of an already expensive trip.

Ooops - I meant to put this in off topic. Sorry.

don't worry about the off topic category.
the webmaster has not been able to fix the glitch yet and when it is fixed, i will move it.

i wonder if those that have made the side trip to curacao have found it to be something they'd do again?
i have been told from friends that go to curacao for a week every year, that many restaurants are phenomenal......giving great dining experiences.

We have done the same thing, having a vacation during our vacation. Thought about Curacao but ended up doing the Pullmantur cruise boarding in Aruba. It was a lot of fun and not that expensive. As long as you don't mind that everything is in Spanish. This winter we are planning another trip but haven't decided on where to go. I personally wouldn't do Curacao as we went there for a day on the cruise and that was enough for me (not in a bad way just now been there) We were thinking Cuba as it looks like you can get there with Copa from Aruba, but we might just head to S.A. We dealt with a young guy named Stephen at the Maduro travel office in Noord. He was really helpful. Will be interested on what you decide.

We did a day trip to Curacao a couple of years ago and loved it. Would definitely like to go back again. We had Dutch friends who were on vacation in Curacao while we were in Aruba so they picked us up at the airport, drove us all over (we went to a couple of beaches that we loved and some beach bars, went to the Seaquarium, snorkeled, etc.) We took an early 7am flight out and landed in Curacao at 7:30am. Took an 8pm flight back and we were back in Aruba by 8:30pm and having a late dinner at Bingo by 9pm.

You will definitely need a rental car there to drive to the beaches and explore. We loved downtown Willemstad because it was much more European than Aruba. Our favorite beaches were Knip Beach and Playa Porto Mari. Our friends were staying at the Lion's Dive and Beach Resort so we also spent some time at their beach. Here is a link to photos of the various beaches and explanations about each one: http://www.curacao-travelguide.com/discover/beaches/ You can snorkel right from most of the beaches there - the water is crystal clear (reminds me of how Aruba's water used to be - not that it isn't clear in some places but all of the beaches in Curacao had amazing water.)

We used Tiara Air - no problems, on time, and even got breakfast on the morning flight (hot pastechi and a juice box.)

My wife and I decided to go to Curacao about 8 yrs ago since we love Aruba so much we figured we would love Curacao too..Boy what a mistake that turned out to be..The people there are not as friendly as the Aruban people and it's alot harder to get around by car over there..We had a map and street signs that were on the map weren't on the road and signs that were on the road weren't on the map..It was a more Dutch based island than Aruba..We tried to ask for directions from people but because of the language barrier that turned out to be very hard..We finally decided to return the rental car and just take cabs..We went into town one day and when the cab drops you off you then walk across a pontoon bridge into the town..There is a fruit and vegetable market and they toss the rotten fruits and vegetables into the street at the curb..Street people would be eating this discarded stuff right from the gutter..We weren't that impressed with Curacao at all..We went to the Aquarium and took a tour of the Amstel brewery but we moslty just spent the rest of the week at the Marriott Emerald casino..It was ok to see once but I would never go back again..My advice to you would be to see if you could get to Cuba instead..You will have a much better time..

From what I hear and read, Curacao seems ok. Petty theft and theft seems to be the biggest problem there. There is a low occurrence of violent crime; so you are safe. I think I may visit Curacao for a few days, while in Aruba.

Whatever you do, avoid St Maartin/St Martin like the plague. St Maartin/St Martin is NOT safe.

Aruba is, by far, the lowest crime destination and safest place in the Caribbean.
