AA Economy to or from AUA (no perks category)

Have any of you traveled using the AA ECONOMY mode?
Charge for carry on, as well as checked and charge for assigned seats.

Ugh! We made the mistake one time to Aruba on maybe our third trip. So it wasn't the "new" Basic Economy on American (US Air at the time). But it was basic and economy and pretty much sucked. We have never flown economy since... anywhere...

Our return flight from AUA to SYR was on AA this past October. AA had already seated us together and we both had one under seat bag at no charge. Our connection was CLT, which is a nice stop and breaks up the travel time. There is no such thing as a direct flight for us anyway. The itinerary is nice for us as we get to stay on the island for a good part of the day and land at our final destination just over seven hours from departure. The flight is usually pretty reasonable too, as we usually pay between $200-225 pp one way. Our least expensive airline to the island is usually on Delta, for about the same price. We often fly on different airlines either way.

AA is the only real choice for us. It has direct flights from Philadelphia to Aruba, however; I don't think we would use the Basic Economy unless it was a short flight for a short stay trip. We both like aisle seat and usually book them across from each other, especially on longer flights. It is about 4 1/2 hours more or less from Philly to Aruba and while it is no where near as long our the 16 hour flight we were on to Asia, I still want to be comfortable.

...so another couple booking adjoining aisles...... it's the only way for us to fly w/o killing each other! Our added benefit is that better than half the time one of us is alone in the row.... so we get to sit with a seat between us.

Does getting stuck in the middle seat qualify for the "no perks" category? Just saying, it is not fun When we first started flying we used to get the cheapest seats but don't think we were ever charged for carry-ons. Now we pay extra for just about anything that will make our flight more comfy. Hoping to have our airfare covered by our American points this year even though I'd rather fly Delta again but if it means no money for airfare will settle for that of course.

I don’t think we would fly basic or economy either. We like to sit together and be comfortable. It has taken me many years to just be comfortable flying. I used hate it.

What annoys me are when people who aren't seasoned travelers book these super economy rates, and then get upset because they got what they paid for and want you to switch seats or make room for the extra stuff they brought on board.

and sometimes the bold/arrogant seasoned travelers make the same demands.
