The FAA is fining every airline for maintenance issues right now. They're trying to make up for the fact that they largely ignored violations for a long time.

We just came back using AA. Things looked okay. We did have a new procedure added to bording. They check every passanger bags and patted us down before we were able to board. We were all boarded and ready to go in time. The procedure seems to have gone smothly

this new procedure was put in place during christmas week when a terrorist or a terrorist wannabee lit himself on fire in a plane heading to (detroit?)

AA in aruba has been strict about these extra searches and pat downs at the gate. jet blue has loosened up a bit.
