ORANJESTAD — A Boeing 757 of American Airlines with 130 passengers returned to Reina Beatrix airport shortly after departure due to engine problems. The aircraft, that was en route to Boston, made a successful emergency landing, and nobody was injured.

Around four-thirty in the afternoon, the pilots of the American Airlines aircraft were confronted with an alarm. The computer system indicated the aircraft’s left engine was overheated. Subsequently, the air traffic control was informed about the alarm, and the aircraft returned to the airport. Emergency services, such as the police and fire brigade, were warned and they arrived at the airport – for safety’s sake. After several minutes, the pilots announced they required no assistance in landing. The aircraft had landed safely at the Reina Beatrix airport at 4:54 hours.

The passengers safely left the aircraft and were offered accommodation at various hotels. According to the spokesperson of the airport, Hendrik Croes, the passengers were still on the island this morning. The defective engine will be repaired today so that the passengers could still be flown to Boston with the same aircraft.

No updates on when they left the island. I'm hoping someone posts a trip report about this one!

Yes, it happened sun evening. The people all arrived at the 2 Renn's. 45 rooms taken at our location and 45 rooms at the Marina tower. People waited in our lobby for rooms not very happy. I believe they are all gone. It was flight # 1044.

Scary, thats the flight we usually take. Cant see why anyone wasn't happy, think of the alternative.

I'm so glad the flight was able to land safely.

My father-in-law was on a flight that had to turn around to make an emergency landing due to a malfunctioning warning regarding landing gear (landing gear was fine, warning was wrong). He said he wasn't overly concerned until they were close enough to the airport to see all the emergency vehicles that had been assembled in case of a crash.

I'm not so sure I'd want to fly on that same plane after that.
And who wouldn't be happy to spend an extra day in Aruba, especially vs the alternative of crashing!

Returned to Boston as 9256 as there was already a 1044 scheduled.
