    Air Prices for Fall

    Hi,

My wife and I are heading back to Aruba mid-October. Prices are very high compared to past four years now and for Oct. With fuel dropping, any talk of rates also returning to "normal"?

We used to fly EWR to AUA, but open to PHL, Washington DC or with that range.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Ted

Your best bet is to set up a fare watch on Kayak or Travelocity etc and wait for a sale.

I have been monitoring fares through Travelocity and there have been a good number of last minute bargains on fares. But you have to be flexible in your dates. They vary day to day and prices fluctuate by airline.

    Other things to consider...
Do you have to fly non-stop from EWR or the other airports? Right now United is the only "game in town" in EWR and they can charge what they like?

If not, check connecting flights on Air Tran through Atlanta or Orlando, weekends only, OR Delta through Atlanta.

I have seen some pretty decent rates EWR - AUA, direct and connecting on United. Keep looking - and look daily... I was able to go direct EWR - AUA over new years for less than $500 a ticket, I looked back a few days later and the tickets were over a grand each.

Check pricing from some of the smaller airports nearby. Airlines are more likely to compete on prices for connecting flights than on non-stop routes. If EWR and PHL are nearby, then ABE might be an option. More than anything, keep searching and when you see a price you like, lock it in and don't look back. Unless you book JetBlue, they will refund the difference.

Newark is always high due to low competition.
