Different airfare prices in different internet browsers at the same time

I've been checking prices of airfare to Aruba daily and notice it's higher than normal this year. We don't leave until October,so no emergency. Well, today I saw prices drop $500, so I decided to pull the trigger. I had Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity and Priceline open and they all had similar prices. I opened my email to check my hotel confirmation one last time just to verify the dates. By time I got back to airfare ticketing, the pages had expired, so I refreshed and the prices jumped up over $1800! I refreshed each of the websites and only Orbitz still had the original price, so I booked it. Afterward, I went back to see if I was crazy and sure enough, I just paid $1,100 and the price now shows $3,000. I told my wife and she checked her phone and she still saw the original $1100 price. I went back to the computer and still see $3000. This was using Google Chrome browser. I opened another session in Microsoft Edge browser and a third in Internet Explorer. 2 browsers gave the $3000 price and 1 had the $1100 price...all at the same time. I refreshed all 3 and still the same. I know prices fluctuate, but never realized it mattered which internet browser you were using.

Bottom line is that we have hotel and airline reservations now for October. That was a stressful hour of clicking, double checking and second guessing though.Different airfare prices in different internet browsers at the same time-what.jpg

It is crazy! My feeling is, if you are checking prices using one browser, it knows the dates you are looking for because of the cookies. So, if you open in a different browser you may find a different fare. Glad you were able to book the lower fare!!

I had the same type of day, 3 1/2 hrs. of searching airfares using different sites for my friend while he sat next to me. Every year I say never again but I always give in I called him a couple of months ago with a good price, he wanted to wait to see if they went down, joke was on him as they went up by a lot! Ended up booking for him and his buddy on Southwest which he is not happy about as no seat assignments but he was afraid to gamble anymore and took the lowest price we found. then I had to book the other guys girlfriend separately she is joining them on their 2nd week and flying home with them, bottom line it was crazy. He did learn his lesson though and next time I call him with a good price he says he will book it then! I too had so many tabs open the previous ones kept expiring on me, try having someone sitting next to you who has no clue about computers and kept asking what happened, (lol)

Agreed! I find clearing history & cookies helps get back to that original (lower) price.

The computer programs for booking flights are very complicated. I know some programmers who wrote and/or developed software for airlines. Their advise to me was if I saw a cheap fare and was sure about the date, grab it because it can change in 10 minutes, 1 hour the next day. The programming is very complex and the price will change according to demand and supply which might factor in who is searching for that flight and then it can rest itself if no one books. Last year I missed the opportunity to book Jet Blue Mint at a price that was lower than the regular seating on 2 occasions. I hesitated and the price when back up like in 1 hour. I'm talking about $445 one way to $1,700 1 way Jet Blue Mint. Finally I got it on the third try at 6am for $445 and by 630am it was back up to $1700. There were only 4 people in that Jet Blue Mint section when I flew.

There is an app on Android called Hopper which lets you know best time to book, or if to wait as it will probably go down in price etc. I have tracked a few flights this way and it seems pretty good.
