I've gotten a "free" upgrade once from Orlando to Jamaica. I do ask sometimes though if there is any open first class seats being Active Duty Military.

I was referring to any upgrades outside the normal airline policy. Deviation from standard or published could result in suspension or termination for most customer service employees. I have seen it happen to someone who was simply trying to help a passenger, only to be fired when an elite FF complained about not getting an upgrade.

    Sorry for the confusion.

I'm a lowly Silver Medallion so my chances of getting the free upgrade are even less unless I'm flying with my husband.
This is a head's up for future flights if you are flying with your husband on the same PNR. Upgrades are processed at the lowest level medallion level (will only clear at your level, silver). In other words, you are hindering your husband's chance of an upgrade at the Gold window. The best thing to do is split the record and have each passenger clear at their respective window.

Here's a link to a "fun" chart from the NY Times travel section explaining 1st class upgrades, specifically using Delta's system. Enjoy and good luck.
