Now even the layover flights are over $1000 pp. for a trip 8 months away. At that price how can a family afford to fly? I'm hoping Airtran stays affordable and soon comes to LI now that they are merged with SW. I'd much prefer Islip over LGA or JFK!

I was looking at flights w/Delta for May from JFK and afraid to book the direct flights because they have been known to cancel direct flights to Aruba and change the whole itinerary. It's crazy!! You should call and see if they have the direct at JFK still open and make them change it without any change fee we did that with American once and they accomadated us. Its worth a try.

Southwest will not be expanding airtran. In fact, they are returning the entire Boeing 717 fleet over the next couple years and the replacement aircraft (shiny new 737s) will go directly to Southwest. The 717s will all end up with Delta, believe it or not. The only reason airtran is still in existence today is the outdated software Southwest uses can't handle all of the international flying that airtran is doing. Plus, they're making a lot of money on the Airtran bag fees.

As for adding service to Islip, Southwest killed everyone flying for below cost for so long that everyone else just threw in the towel. There isn't a premium market there to make up for the low price coach tickets.
