    How I buy airline tickets

Linda and I are pretty flexible as to when we can travel to Aruba or anywhere else most of the time. We decide on an approximate date to go and then I start searching for the lowest fares around that time. We almost always buy the plane tickets before we make resort reservations. The exception is when we have to be somewhere on a certain date like if we make a time share trade instead of renting from an owner or resort.

On our trip coming up in June, I checked for fares from the last week of May until the end of June. I found a great price on Delta for June 6th departure, returning June 18th. I put the seats on hold, then checked for owner rentals at Costa Linda for those weeks. I was able to get a 4th floor ocean/pool view for the first week. I found out the Renaissance ocean suites was having a sale for that time and got the last 5 nights there in an ocean view room at 30% off normal rates. I know there will be construction going on at the resort for the next 18 months, but we will be on the private island, baby beach or in the pool during the day so it wont bother us. They don't start on the pool until September. Don't think I would want to stay there when they are working on the pools.

If we had stayed until Friday the 20th, the tickets would have been substantially higher. If we left on any other Friday or Saturday, it would have been higher.

If you are flexible on you dates, this is a good way to get great air fare.

Good idea, but unfortunately for us we are locked into dates for June.

Unfortunately, that's the way it seems to be going. If we want low airfare, travel dates are going to be dictated by the airlines. I too arranged our June trip, leaving Pittsburgh on June 6, because the rate was so much lower than the 7th, 8th, 9th (especially when multiplied by 4). We are returning on Sunday the 15th, which was the cheaper of Friday, Saturday or Sunday. It worked out well though, we are spending 9 nights instead of 7!

makes great sense to me……….sometimes we are all made to feel like we are hostages of airlines.

We have a similar strategy. I check flight most Tuesdays, but also get fare alerts from two different sites. I keep a spreadsheet with a few different rooms and destinations. I have columns for hotels, flights and other expenses and we have a target number in mind. If the whole package falls under that number, we will book. Some of my misc columns are for food and casinos, since some of our wish list destinations are AI and some do not have casinos.
I like seeing the totals. I saw some great flights to a destination recently but when I plugged in the hotel costs, it was outrageous.
Not sure when, but we will be back

Looks like we will be there the same time. We are leaving from Tulsa via Atlanta on delta June 6. Taking our grandson for his high school grad present. He has never been out of the U S before. Staying a week at Costa Linda and 5 nights at Renaissance Ocean suites.

our usual travel dates are the 2 weeks before thanksgiving week and I usually start looking on usair about now….tickets range from 525 to about 475. last year I was about to get tickets for family members that decided to come about a month out for 375…could not believe how cheap the tickets were. It was on usair and they came down on a monday and flew home with us on our flight on sunday…
I was going to start looking for this year when I got and email from usair telling me that my ff status with them would change to the oneworld program in march. I jumped on aa website to see what the status change would mean to me and was very upset to learn that many things i enjoy with usair will not be available to me anymore………..so,longlong story short, i will be watching the forum closer now when folks post what they pay for tickets on other airlines…..will not be flying aa (usair) anymore...

Paid $700 on Jet Blue for September 20th out of NY. However, the price includes extra leg room which is $65 each way. I like the priority pass through security. During my last few trips, even though I was at the airport very early like 530am I could not believe the line to go through security and it was not moving. With the extra leg room I went straight through to the custom agent. Coming back though there is no security benefit. I do also like the leg room and priority boarding..

I wanted a 7am flight which would get me to Aruba by 1130am but it would have been $100 more so I took the 1130am flight which gets me there around 4pm. The room is usually not available till 4pm anyway. However, its nice to start the vacation early and not waste a day..

We will also be there from June 6th to the 18th at the Costa Linda and then at the Renaissance Suites. Our time share at the Costa Linda is from the 6th to the 13th and our Renaissance starts the 13th to the 20th.

Adding to this - flights with American out of DFW were around $890 when we booked on Jan. 28th. Usually they are not this high, more like $500-600. I know Friday to Friday is rough so we usually like to stay longer than just 1 week and fly out on an odd day. We are flying out a Wednesday this year and it was a little cheaper. We booked first class though so I don't know what the cost difference was. 1 trip a year splurge!
