JFK Airport

Has anyone heard about JFK shutting down their main runway as of today for repairs? I heard on a local radio station that it will be out of service for 4 months and they are predicting massive delays. We are flying from Boston to JFK to connect to Aruba. I was nervous anyway as we only have a 45 minute layover. Now I'm really nervous!! Any NY natives have any news? I've already checked to change my flight and there is nothing available - and there would be charges to change - rrrrrrr - not happy right now. Usually we fly Continental thru Newark, but the flight we wanted wasn't available!!

Arrow JFK Airport closes main runway for repairs: report

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/jfk-airport-closes-main-runway-for-repairs-report-2010-03-01

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- One of the main runways at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City will be closed for repairs starting Monday, raising the chance of flight delays and the cost of average airfare. The runway, which handles about a third of the airport's total traffic and half of all departures, will be out of service for at least four months, the Associated Press reported. Airport capacity will fall by about 10%, providing some lift for ticket prices, the news service said. Estimated average delays could be 29 minutes, with waits of up to 50 minutes during peak morning and evening hours, the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to the AP. Workers will widen the 14,572-foot runway and replace its asphalt with more more-durable concrete.

Earlier arrivals and longer layovers are the best hope in this situation. Best of luck

I read that in the Newark Star Ledger this morning. That's going to be a nightmare for the next few months.

jet blue

I checked on our flights for our June vacation to Aruba today. They already canceled the flight we were taking home from Aruba. They moved us to a flight much later in the day. It won't arrive in Boston until 12:15 am. Yes, the flight does go through JFK. If you are going through JFK I suggest you check your itinerary and the flights Jet Blue has scheduled for that day. They could be different than you planned on.

From msnbc.com
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35642905...siness_travel/

"Passengers using JFK also face another headache — higher ticket prices. JetBlue, American, Delta and other airlines have cut their schedules by about 10 percent for the shutdown period. They can raise prices because there will be a smaller number of seats to meet demand."

Considering how much money the airlines have lost during the recession, they may actually be able to tun a profit this year. When you look at the margins, operating an airline is one of the worst possible ways to try and make money.

They have known they were going to do this. I don't understand why they booked all these flights knowing it was going to cause problems for people later. I'm SO grateful we are going direct from Chicago this year!
