words from US CUSTOMS agent in aruba

I wrote to a gentleman that we met on aruba a few months ago.
He is an American, assigned to Aruba US CUSTOMS agent, drug enforcement...
    and other interesting work.

I wrote and said hello and asked him about his job status and the lines.

Here is what he wrote back:

"LOL. My job is safe. We will begin getting our days off in April. 1 day per pay period for the remainder of the year.

The lines at the airport are a result of many variables. I would recommend to those who like to wait until the last possible minute to get to the airport or get to their gates. To stop that practice. The airlines are not allowed to expedite late passengers and the Aruba Border Police will put you back in your spot in line if you get caught jumping the line, even if you have permission from the person in front of you.

    Take care"

    so, leave plenty of time
and the furlough days begin next week.

It's a shame that the front line people lose work and have to get by on less money. It's not only bad for them..... the ripple effect causes great inconvenience to others too.

Maybe some of the politicians could do the same and take some cuts. Maybe we could actually get by with half the Senators and half of the congressmen..... and half of their staffs.... and get them to have the same health insurance coverage that other federal employees get...... I could go on and on..... we waste so much money in our government!

I'm already anticipating a "not much fun" day when returning next month. I'm just thankful I'm returning on a Tuesday when there are less flights but....could be just as bad now. Who knows.....

I just returned from Aruba this past Saturday, 3/23. I arrived at the terminal at 945am for my 1245pm flight back to Boston on Jetblue. After going through checking in and the security checkpoints, I was at the gate waiting for the flight at 1055am. Not so bad, but I am sure glad I arrived when I did; the lines were starting to get very long as I left the ticket counter. My advice, get to the airport 3 hrs before your flight or plan on spending alot of time in the lines esp. if leaving on a Saturday

The last 2 days have been crazy at the airport. We had volunteer transporters for the dogs. Yesterday, the JetBlue flight was an hour late leaving Aruba because of the line at customs. We were there 3 hours early. Today, we were first in line at the ticket counter. The flight was scheduled to depart at 2:10. The ticket counter opened at 11:15. At 2:00 I received a phone call that our volunteer was still in the customs line. The flight didn't leave Aruba until 4:00 p.m. Our transporters were going non stop to JFK on Delta. However, I am sure that lots of people missed their connections today. Even if you get there earlier than 3 hours, you cannot check in. These were weekdays. Can't imagine Saturday lines.

    lines at airport

When leaving Aruba, with all this talk of lines, etc. If you only have carry on and go through the first part, when its time to claim your luggage before going through US Customs, if you don't need to do that, can you pass the people and go right through to customs? do you have to wait for the people to get luggage, too? I recall the us customs guy answering andrea something about they won't let you get in front of people. can't you just walk pass the carousels and go straight to the us customs line?????
