I agree with staying away from the Northeast in the winter. Could you book 2 separate flights, a R/T from IAH to MIA then a round trip from MIA to AUA?

A friend's son got married 7? years ago and they went to Aruba on their honeymoon. They flew out of Newark. They day they were coming home a week later on March 17th Newark airport was closed as we had a ice storm. I called the groom's mother that I saw it on the news and that she should contact her son in Aruba. She did and of course they weren't watching the news in Aruba and knew nothing of the airport being closed.

They went to the front desk (Occidental) to extend their stay. They were told that they had to check-out and wait until 4 pm check-in time how many new guests were going to arrive. They jumped in a taxi to the airport. Continental (now United) told them that they would get them home by the end of the month. End of the month - that was 2 weeks away. I guess they went nuts on the airline agent. Finally they were told that they would get them home on Thursday. That was still 5 nights more that they had to pay for a hotel room plus meals, etc.

I called the Aruban Resort (now Tropicana) where I owned some timeshares and got them a room where they did stay. At least they had another 5 nights to enjoy Aruba but they had no cash left except for taxi fare to the airport. The last night at the Occidental they blew all the money that had left in the Casino. They had a credit card but they didn't take a ATM card with them. No more Casino's for them.

My advice is don't take a chance flying north in the winter and also the weather can be iffy in March.

Thank you everyone. Looks like we will fly United to FLL and SW from FLL to AUA. I definitely do not want to deal with the unpredictable NE weather

I was flying to Puerto Rico out of Philly during that ice storm. What a mess that was. So many delays and cancellations. On top of it all US air really dropped the ball and our flight took off only 1/3 full with people that could have taken that flight sleeping in the airport.

I'm glad you changed your flights. We live near PHL but a friend of mine, who rarely travels, wanted to go to Hawaii for her 25 Anniversary, and was afraid that if she had connecting flights, she'd miss one or her luggage would not get transferred. She paid the extra money and drove to EWR(Newark) for a direct flight to HON. Her 8:40 am United flight finally left about 7:30 pm that night. That was on August 2, yes last week.
