Possible Airport Strike
Those visitors planning on coming to Aruba in the next week or so should take NOTE that there is talk of a strike at the airport. The union wants a 25% salary increase with no merit based pay and several other demands. The operator of the airport is offering 8%.
Last year the entrance to the airport was blocked and people had to walk from the traffic intersection all the way in to the airport. Not good, especially for those senior citizens and handicapped people. So, be sure to pay close attention to your flights and things. There has been a similar action at Customs where cargo has been delayed for days, including perishable items. This may or may not affect your travel plans. Bon dia. |

Think long delays, think possible diverted flights, think waiting in line for hours instead of half an hour. Think about your luggage catching up with you later, if at all.
What fun. And hey, in this economy 25% increase is fair, right? |

Pack your clothes in a carry on!!! Don't we all wish we could request 25% raises
and hope we get at least half. Nowadays if we have jobs, you are lucky to get a raise at all. Dh received a whopping 2% raise this year which was more than eaten up by increased contributions to medical insurance. <<<stepping off my soap box.>>> The Arubans heard Cindy and RobO were heading down soon. Isn't that what happened to the airport last year when they heard they were coming? Bonfire greetings and all???

Strike? Email I just recieved...whats up?
Just recieved this email on a strike, anyone heard anything about it?? Poor Sannic44....thats a drag, cindyo
Unforunately, due to a strike of the Customers Officers of Aruba, the book signing on Tues, Feb 3, at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort has been postponed. A new shipment of books is not being released by the port until the strike concludes. The rescheduled date will be announced as soon as it is available. If the strike effects additional signings, we will contact you with an update. Thank you for your understanding.

Well when all is said and done if they do get 25% We all know who pays---We do. It will be sad when there 25% turns to $0.00 when tourists cant afford to go and there company cant afford to pay. Be careful what you ask for.

Now, I am not going to say this will happen again, however...... I will chime in about this anyway..
Sh-t, I don't like the sound of the strike mess. Last year was a very unpleasant time for us. We "paid" for "uncertainty" for 2 weeks...Not good ! I will not go into the details, but it was a scarey time for us. I am sure some of the regulars here on the board remember my posts during last years strike. 25% is a bit much, when we already heard NO raises here and layoffs hitting home. We're lucky we are able to go, who knows what next year will bring. I am all for people getting paid for what they do, but lets be REALISTIC here. Remember, this is LAST year I am talking about. Please, please arubans, think twice before doing this. off my soapbox now.

CindyO,
My apologies to all. I am told by the customs broker that this is an informal "sick-out" or something and the delays will stretch into next week, most likely past Wednesday. Again, myself and all involved here are doing everything we can to come up with a solution. Thank you, 44 |
