The poster on that thread wrote:
"There are talks again of a possible strike at the airport on Saturday. Airport Management and the Union of Airport Workers (STA) did not come to an agreement at their last meeting. The STA representative told the media that they did initially reach an agreement, but when he presented these to their members, there were 2 items that they did not agree on. When STA went back to sit with the Management and explained what their members wanted/said, the Airport Management then refused any deal at all.The VP of STA was questioning the salary of those present, who are making good money, and said that the union workers should receive a raise. A while back the airport said that they pay their employees good money, but STA said that employees with 29 years of service don't even reach 4000 florins a month about $2200.. STA mentioned that the director of the airport and his staff make good money, but he's holding up the smaller men to make a good living. An urgent meeting was called for tomorrow. If they don't come to an agreement tomorrow, then a possible strike will occur on Saturday, they said it's a really busy day so the strike will have a direct effect." Unfortunately the poster's information is accurate. She speaks fluent Papiamento (among 4 other languages ) and reads the Aruban online Papiamento & Dutch language papers daily. She aso speaks with her parents daily who live on the island. So the above is straight summation of the information she has garnered from the island press.

I asked around at the airport yesterday and no one was talking about anything in terms of strike. Perhaps they didn't want to tell me anything. Not sure.
However, I was there all day for a book signing event in the duty free area and things seemed to run smoothly after a delay around 10AM. So as of this writing, Sunday 15 March, things were working. I do have my nose to the ground and will report if something comes up. 44 |
