purchased tickets for July

I bit the bullet and went ahead and purchased our 4 tickets to Aruba out of Newark for July/August. I was using Kayak.com to monitor prices but wasn't thrilled with the pattern. The lowest fares were for itineraries that were longer than 20 hours. If I wanted to hang out in Miami for a day and pay for a hotel room to boot, then maybe I'd consider it. But we're traveling with toddlers and we would be ready to slit our wrists after 10 hours.

How much did you get the tickets for? I've been checking prices for July 27-Aug 3 leaving out of either JFK or Newark and can't believe how high they are!!

They ended up being around $650 each for Newark to Aruba on American (incl. all fees).

One other factor is that American does not charge for the 1st checked bag per person to Aruba from US.

We bought tickets on Delta for May. Tulsa to Aruba was $733. We have enough frequent flier miles to go on American but we would leave Tul at 06:00am and arrive in AUA at 10:00pm and change planes in DFW, Houston and MIA. On Delta we leave at 06:00am and arrive AUA at 02:30pm with one change in ATL. Return on AA was 08:00am arriving TUL 10:30 pm with 3 plane changes. Return on Delta is 03:30 from AUA arriving TUL 09:30 with change in ATL. We will save the FF miles for another trip.

Tried using AAdvantage miles for trip but none of the lower end awards were available. I would have needed 60,000 miles for one R/T.

Yesterday, I purchased 5 tickets out of Newark on Continental for June. I paid $438 each including all taxes for non stop flights. When I checked the fares today the price had risen to $610. What a difference a day makes. It goes to show that when you see a reasonable fare, jump on it.

Is Aruba really that much busier that airfares go to the $600 and $700 range for the summer or they know ppl are taking vacations and will pay it. I usually go in the fall or early spring and its in the $400 range.

Aruba is consistent, unlike a lot of other destinations, thanks to the abundance of time shares.

From what I have seen with hotel bookings, the only real "slow" times are post-spring break until school is over and right after school is back in session until Thanksgiving in the US.
