It really changed the start of vacation, and has left us dragging.

For anyone reading the thread--this was a fluke thing, and should in no way dissuade you from visiting Aruba. We hope the SWA flight vouchers can be used when we come back next summer.

A fluke indeed! How one or two people can ruin it for thousands and themselves. They better lawyer up real good but either way it's going to cost them time, money, embarrassment, reputation. If they work for a big corporation they will most likely get fired.

I'm sure you never imagined your first posts being like this, or your 1st day of vacation. I feel so bad for you. I understand the airline staff not being able to use the word "bomb" but they could have said something like a "threat" was made to somewhat ease tensions if you know what I mean. This way you would know everyone was safe in Aruba and on the airline in question. I cannot imagine what you and others went thru. How nice to have Bully greet you, I agree his big smile and hug does wonders. I hope the rest of your time is nothing but fun and relaxation. Please write to let us know you are having a great time. Such a nice gesture by the people in the "crying room" to welcome your flight!!!

Our pilot said there were 28 planes on the ground already in Curacao, which is why Southwest opted to send us to one of their destination airports. At least one other airline also diverted to Punta Cana.

We were in the plane on the tarmac there for more than 90 minutes, with no AC and no beverages. If you have had a similar experience, you know what that is like. The delays cost us what usually feels like a full first day of vacation. We arrived too late for beach time, too late to get a dinner reservation (Tamarijn), and the family was in bed by 8 pm due to exhaustion and dehydration. Not only
should the person who thought this was funny face federal charges, they owe personal apologies to thousands of travelers and hundreds of airline crew.
I read all your posts about this experience.... I truly hope the rest of your stay makes up for all the BS you had to put up with due to someone's stupid STUPID prank. Welcome to the forum.

Apparently the two female suspects are looking at up to a 9-year 'vacation' on the island...

"This is one of two female American nationals arrested in the SW bomb scare a few days ago. The captain of this flight found a vomit bag with the words Bomb written on it in the lavatory which was reason enough to sound the alarm. Upon investigation, local authorities arrested these ladies. The pen which was used to write on the bag was found in the possession of the person photographed. The interrogation at the airport lasted till 9pm and according to the article they can face up to 9 years jail time under local law."

We have been told that the two suspects faced immediate extradition to the US, and that Aruba refused entry for them. (Source: Tamarijn staff commenting on local news.)

Our family now jokes that those two need to vacation in a US Federal prison for a little while and become characters on Orange is the New Black, where other inmates mock them for their hubris and abuse of societal privilege. Really....who would think a prank is worth sabotaging their own trip to Aruba?

Thank you all for your kindness and moral support!

Have to wonder why we don't see this being reported on in the US, especially since the flight orginated from here. Can certainly understand why Aruba denied them entry though.

Anyhow, hope you are having a blast at the Tam!

It is somewhat shocking that it never made the "news" so to speak. If it was not for this forum we would not have even known it happened.

I have been told by a friend that works in Aruba immigration that the USA federal will take control of the prosecution of both.
    Terrorists?

The certainly caused a lot of terror! I would not feel bad seeing them to 10 plus years. If/when we hold people accountable for their crimes there would be fewer of them? Eye for an eye...I would be a poor judge or a great one depending on how you view criminals, lol.
