I am so torn. We are supposed to leave out of Newark Monday morning. We called the Riu, the only way we won't get charged a fee is if our flight get cancelled. It would cost 450 to change our hotel reservations on our own and the airlines haven't cancelled the flight yet. I am hoping they do soon. The flight for tomorrow was booked anyway but we are fine with leaving a few days later as I am not comfortable leaving my mother and dogs in a storm that will most likely be a doozy. It's so frustrating, I hate not knowing!

    i hear ya.
so many of us commiserate with you........
your words "as I am not comfortable leaving my mother and dogs in a storm that will most likely be a doozy." please do only what you feel comfortable with. we can all offer advice and suggestions, but at the end of the day you and yours have to feel comfortable.

chances are that your flight will be cancelled and the penalty that the riu has mentioned will not be in effect.
wishing you well and hoping you get to aruba this week!
we are heading there on friday........from the tampa bay area.

Thanks Andrea. We were cancelled. Can't get anyone from United on the phone. The website isn't offering any alternate flights yet. The Riu waves their penalty when the airline cancels, but can't reschedule until we know when we are going. Anybody have any secret numbers for united? They are actually disconnecting people now, not even leaving you on hold just plain hanging up on you.

    in the meantime...

    Flight delays and cancellations

    Getting rebooked
When your itinerary requires rebooking because of a flight delay or cancellation, our automated systems will attempt to confirm you on the next United flight that has seats available. Using your original confirmation number, you can find out if and how you've been rebooked as follows:

Last updated over 3 hours ago Good morning from FlightAware.com,

Over 3,000 flight cancellations so far as a result of Hurricane Sandy -- details below:

707 flights cancelled to/from/within the US today. Most affected is Newark (EWR), a United hub, with over 265 cancellations today.

2,499 flights cancelled to/from/within the US tomorrow (Monday). Most affected is Newark (EWR), with 774 cancellations, second is Dulles with 428 cancellations, third is Philadelphia with 355 cancellations.

Although most air traffic control towers will close when the wind reaches 60-70kts, the big factor that will result in early flight disruptions is mass transit shutdowns and the availability of airline and airport staff due to their need to prepare for the storm. For example, NYC MTA is planning a 7pm train shutdown this evening. Another big factor potentially affecting coastal airports is high tide; LGA is the most likely big airport to close (only 4ft above high tide), followed by JFK.

United Airlines is expected to be most affected; they have hubs near NYC (EWR) and DC (IAD). United will be shutting down DC operations around 7-8pm tonight with a plan to resume flights sometime on Tuesday after 12p. United will be shutting down PHL and JFK/EWR/LGA operations tonight between 6-7pm with a plan to resume operations sometime after 6pm on Tuesday.

US Airways will announce their cancellation schedule at noon today although their regional carrier, Air Wisconsin, has already cancelled flights on Monday at PHL and DCA. JetBlue is also deciding later pending determination of staffing availability.

Every airline is allowing fee-free changes (and refunds in some cases) for itineraries potentially impacted by the storm. The best way to make flight changes is on airline websites; call centers are typically overwhelmed during major events.

We expect the number of flight cancellations for tomorrow and Tuesday to rise considerably throughout the day and will send another update this evening.

Thank you Lisa. After all day of phone calls, we got a flight for Wednesday morning out of Newark. The Riu was super helpful and will be compliant if we run into issues for Wednesday (power outages, flooding) as to why we would have to change flights again.
I'm super bummed but natural disasters are beyond my control. Only thing that stinks is now we have to connect in NC rather than a direct flight but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Thanks again for your help.

I'm glad to hear that about Player's Choice since we are planning to use them for my stepdaughter's guests for her wedding. They obviously care or wouldn't have opened on a sunday during a potential disaster to help their clients. talk about "customer service"!!!
