    US Customs Kiosks

Cindy created a thread about the Global Entry and it brought to mind some thoughts about the new and "improved" US Customs process.

Is the process really more efficient?

    Does it speed the process?

When we went thru in May, on a Tuesday there were no lines.

At the SWA counter we were given the US Customs form to be completed.

Then at the US Customs kiosk we had our passports scanned, had the photos taken and off to see the agent in the booth.

When it is busy in that area (and it was not when we were there) is it chaotic and is it more efficient? Is it more efficient for the US Customs or for the passenger?

We used the automated kiosk on a Sunday in February. It was fairly crowded. I think it was at least a little quicker and easier.

Are these the machines lined along the wall in US customs? Can anyone use them? We saw them in April (a Saturday so very busy), we only saw one person use them, so we assumed you had to have Global Entry to use them.

i don't know if they are lined up along the walls. the one we used was directly in front of us and a bit off to the left as we entered the US Customs room. i did see a few Global Entry machines, and the 2 i saw were against a wall.

In February there were lines but it did seem to go pretty quickly on a late Sunday flight . The line needed to be Re routed; line went back into the luggage room and it was kind of a hassle for people trying to get around the line to get to their bags then back to find the end of the line. I cant imagine how this was a the peak times.Once in the customs room they had a small area where you walked thru the maze lines then to the kiosks where there were people there to help. Our wait was probably made worse by the woman behind me complaining the entire time!
I consider myself computer savy but I have to admit I was a little intimidated at first. Then we had another short wait for the customs officer who was also intimidating. Now that they can focus more on people coming thru than forms and passports, he really stared us down looking for reactions to his questions. We were just normal law abiding people with nothing to hidentify and it made me nervous, I can't imagine someone coming through who was actually doing something wrong.
Not sure when, but we will be back

I know when we used them, I don't see it being any faster. You still had to see the customs guy. So now you had an additional step. I'm sure its used for safety reasons but not for speeding up the process. Personally I think it added, not a significant amount but it wasn't any bargain or magical process that let you glide through.

We've used the Automated Passport Control kiosks at the Aruba airport in January. To me, it didn't seem like it saved any time at all. We also used them in the Minneapolis Airport last August when we returned from Italy - everything was really smooth and fast. The difference? More customs agents at the Minneapolis Airport.

On a Friday in February, we used them. Left the Renaissance at 12:15 and were sitting at the gate an hour later at 1:15

was there in April. The customs folks made everyone use them....they were a bit confusing although not difficult. seemed to take more time then just seeing an agent, especially since afterwards we still had to see an agent before being allowed to pass. Not sure it sped up the process.
Maybe if you do the kiosk and then can go straight through......You know, the more high tech we get the worse off we are ......
