THese rates seem very high, do they do this to discourage importing into the country?

Thank You Lizzardo.
That information was much appreciated.
As I had said on another string I just assume 22% on any item I send down. When I sent appliances and cabinets down the rate was all over the place 22% for the gas dryer but 12% for the clothes washer. Gas dryer must be a luxury. I guess they figure you have the sun to dry your clothes.

Thumbs up

Any country discourage imports.
If they don't do it, they should from a National Economics view.
It is actually in general not so bad here in Aruba, considering their "VAT" is only 3%.
Many countries have 16-25% VAT and then the import duty on top of that.
The only complaint I have is that the different rates are often illogical. If they would take 10% across the board that would be ok.
When I order online from the US, I normally are taxed 12% total.
From my personal experience for the last two years, I would even say that the time that Aruba customs take to handle your deliveries are far better than their reputation. Not fast, but not as slow as I have heard.

P.S. I love the 22% umbrella tax in Liz's post .

I thought that was a laugh or typo.

Even with the small amount of rain, how would one use a rain umbrella in Aruba with that wind???

Unless of course we are talking patio umbrellas which would be a necessity, so someone is making sure they get the cut.

I know - it's a crazy un-logical system for sure!!! One note -
I ship down vitamins sometimes - sometimes they make
it thru w/ no problem. Right now customs is holding them ,
had to go sign something and now I think they are reviewing
the ingredients.....

If you know someone who is coming down have them bring down your over the counter stuff and vitamins!

Based upon the duties, I'm only going to wear lingerie and limit my entertainment to books.

Danadog,

Depends on the duty imposed on the hat.
