Question Do You Roll or Lay Flat

6 Tips for Wrinkle-Free Packing

Dh and I did a "pack off" once so I could prove once and for all that rolling clothes saves room.

What do you do?

I know it has been proven time and again that rolling works, but I worry about having to iron which is strange because I iron no matter what anyway...sometimes I don't make much sense even to me. I will try rolling this year and let you know what everything came out like !!!

Michele, I refuse to iron on vacation, but everything does get ironed before it goes INTO the suitcase. Why do I do that? Let us know what you think when you return.

Arublisa,
Yes, I will try that...both actually ironing before and then rolling....anything to make less work once vacationing.....especially since there really is no time to iron anyway, too much sun and fun to attend to !!!

As far as packing, we roll almost entirely with no problems at all.

But then, we've not ironed clothing in 20+ years.

Most of my vacation clothes are from travelsmith.com -- need no ironing at all.

We do own an iron. We use it to iron veneer wood strips to the exposed edges of plywood.

I do a combination of packing. I LOVE large zip-lock bags, and pack-it cubes.

I fold pants in half, half again (fits perfectly in half suitcase), or sometimes just in half.

Underwear goes in pack-it cubes
toiletries in zip-lock bags
(and the zip-locks make great dirty laundry bags coming home.

I usually lay everything out on the bed according to "type". Bathing, daytime t-shirts etc.....I will usually try to put each stack straight in the suitcase (I use "department store folding" for most shirts). I sometimes roll t-shirts.

I actually dont mind ironing. What I will do is when I unpack I will take 20 min and iron whatever needs it for the first couple of days. Otherwise the wrinkles usually hang out.

And of course, I take too much. I actually do TWO suitcases, so I know in Sept I will pay $20 for the second suitcase on jet blue but its cheaper than paying overweight of $50.

I use a LLBean duffle w/wheels, does great - put my snorkle gear on the bottom then roll up shirts, shorts etc. put shampoo, sunblock in freezer bags. Also pack instant oatmeal, and cheerios in freezer bags. Take a fairly large tupperware and put snacks and crackers in. All works out good for us.
