Since 1980, and throughout the many changes, we still love going downtown in Oranjestad.

    Hi everybody,

I have this idea for thread. You never know how these things turn out.

Anyway, here's the question. What is the tackiest, the most "what were they thinking of", the most cringe-worthy souvenir you have ever seen (or maybe even bought) in Aruba?

For me it was a t-shirt which featured a silhouette of a dreadlocked Rastafarian, with the caption "We be jammin' Aruba". We saw it in one of those t-shirt shops in Oranjestad behind the Sonesta. No, of course I didn't buy it!

About a month after we got home, we were in a supermarket here in Winnipeg and we see a woman wearing a t-shirt of the same design, and the same caption but with Barbados instead of Aruba. I've got a vision in my head of thousands of "We be jammin' " t-shirts all over the Caribbean.

The only caveat is that you have to have seen it in Aruba.

I think we can have fun with this.

Years ago most likely on one of my first visits, I purchased a tee shirt that said "If when I die I do not go to heaven, please send me to Aruba". I still have it somewhere in my "bins of summer stuff" I think I wore it once to a party. I think it has a picture of a duck on it but can't quite remember! Basically bought it for the saying.

On our first trip via cruise in 2002, I bought a coconut hull purse. I've yet to carry it... it just hangs in my closet and makes me smile.

If you wander through the souvenir shacks along the main drag in Orangestadt, you'll se tacky souvenirs by the dozen. They are mostly made elsewhere in the world (china, Africa...) and have no real connection to Aruba or its culture. Wood swords and snakes, all kinds of cups, shot glasses mass produced that get Aruba labels slapped on at the last minute. You get the idea.

How about the Rastafarian Caribbean Joe guy on the "Aruba" coffee mug we got 12 +/- years ago..... it looks so Jamaican ...... I guess all mass produced souvenirs are multi purpose and interchangeable depending on geography...!
