I emailed a few places for pricing over Christmas 2015, only heard back from a few. Trop told me to try back in February. Since most of you are happy, I will wait for them and compare against budget. Tropic will be first choice since everyone ravs over Hans, gotta go with a recommendation.

I would definitely try Hans first. Customer Service and Great Cars, that's his motto (or should be, lol).

I wonder why some car rentals are offering discounted rates for cash purchases? I would be concerned with not having the insurance that comes with using your AMEX or similar.

Cash avoids the fees that the card companies impose on a merchant for a transaction. Maybe too..... cash has a different accounting trail for income reporting for some folks.

    I understand that.
I'm curious as to my liability issues by not using a credit card, and also was surprised to see the cash option for the first time with a auto rental company.

I would weigh the difference between what you're saving and your piece of mind. You're in a foreign country (I don't care which country it is). At the minimum, purchase their insurance but by doing so, are you really saving money? Those are the questions you need to ask but I would definitely want some form of car insurance.

How are is the rental covering THEIR liability without a credit card deposit? I can understand the cash discount post-rental but what if somebody crashed a car, left it and just flew home? The company wouldn't have the ability to pursue the costs.

i am sure that if somebody crashed and tried to fly, they'd be detained at the airport.
one call to aruba immigration and the name would be flagged.

i remember reading of a situation like that years ago.
there was a rental car situation that caused the rental car company to be very unhappy.
the car renter was detained at the airport and forced to go back to the car rental agency across the street to make things right.
if memory serves, it was over a missing spare tire.
