It will direct you, but speaking from experience this week with my Garmin, it only had the main (and I mean MAIN) roads and generally not worth lugging. More than half the time it was recalculating.

Thank you so much for that info! Who would you suggest renting a car from? We are staying at Marriott Ocean Club! Thanks

I tried editing the post to take out the url because you are a new member and it still would not go through...but anyway...here is my reply....

I would read through some of the threads on the forum for rental companies. If price is your main consideration, many companies are presently offering specials, you need to go to each website though in order to view them.

We have used Amigo and Avis as of late, with no problems whatsoever.

Aruba is pretty easy to navigate - you can never be too lost. The main roads are easy to follow and if you venture off just grab a map. The cost to buy the Garmin Caribbean maps would outweigh the benefit.

The download below is "free", though donations are appreciated.

Again, not worth lugging...any map is just as good.

Post Venrut - Garmin compatible Map

Hello,

I just returned from a trip to Aruba. I am happy to say that I have found a perfect routeable GPS map for Aruba - it is called VENRUT. It is basically a Garmin City Navigator for Venezuela. It just happens to include all 3 ABC islands on it. It worked perfectly. I have never stayed on this island before, except for a quick cruise ship stop... yet I found everything I needed and more with this GPS map.

Basically, I downloaded VENRUT for free on the internet, installed it. It IS mapsource compatible, by the way. Before I even left home, I was searching waypoints and saving them as favorites.

Some way points I had to mark myself were : Aruba Aloe, Cafe Capri, Sultan, Indo, Essoville Rum Shop.... etc.... since these were not already in the system.
Since adding all my favorites, I also have an excellent waypoint file, including those odd one that SanNic44 recommends.

PROBLEMS:

The one and only problem I had with this map was that it did not recognize one way streets. So I almost found myself turning into do not enter signs around Oranjestad a couple of times, luckily I jumped one street down and it was ok.

By the way, the maps are so accurate, they route on the dirt roads around Madame Janettes. All the dirt roads were there (even a blocked one).

I loved how my Garmin VOICE pronounced "J.E. Irausquin Blvd" as
"Jay IROSHOWSKY Boulevard" LOL!

The GPS also allowed me to avoid downtown Oranjestad from the eagle beach area by first routing to a Paradera waypoint, then to my destination on the other side of Oranjestad, this took me the back way each time, to avoid traffic.

Now imagine that I am a complete newbie in Aruba, and thanks to this map, I can find my way around the other side of Orangestad on my first trip. Not to mention all my favorites are still saved.

Very cool.
