Who knows why things are the way they are! But I know what the price is from the airport to our destination, it is the same each time and it is going up.

Some drivers have become so greedy they now ignore the government-set rates and charge whatever they want (A $17 taxi from the airport became a $40 one two years ago when an unscrupulous driver demanded $20 from each of us sharing the cab). This is one more reason why we now rent a car and drive wherever, whenever we want.

How much does a rental car cost? Is it hard to drive in aruba?

Most restaurants as well as casinos and the touristy places are conveniently located in the area of the low-rise and high-rise hotels ,very close to your hotel thus.
the Taxi fares range between $6 to $8 to any of these restaurants. To town shopping the fare ranges between $8 to $10 depending in which hotel you're staying.
Moving around in Taxis is safe and does'nt cost as much as if you were renting a car.
Renting a car might be a convenience but you're actually paying for something that most of the time you won't be using but still are paying for it even though most of the time it's parked in your hotel parking lot.
Put a scratch on it and they will take your car insurance fee.
Make a schedule of the places and restaurants that you would like to visit and you can figure out how much it's going to cost you ,which is a lot less and with no risk att all.
Unfortunatelly one of the things we're not so happy to brag about is our "traffic", we have one of the worst traffic if not the worst traffic in the carribbean with the most casualties.
So you will be a lot safer taking a Taxi and let a local who knows our traffic drive you around and besides it's a lot less expensive than renting a car. Be safe.

It appears that you have never driven in Boston, New York, LA, or San Francisco.
That said we have rented for 3 out of our 5 trips, either way works.
The taxi's have never been an issue. The Buses run regular, are safe, and clean.
Rented once from Avis, once from Hertz, and in very shortly our second time from Thrifty. Never had an issue.
Yes, most things are close, but the convince of having a car on hands outweighs the wait for taxi's or buses. At an average of less than $30 a day IMHO it is the way to go for me.
