    Warning about Renting a car

This post is intended to assist folks who will be renting a car on the island. For over 7 years, we have rented cars several times a year. We own property on the island and the management and owners of the rental car firm...Royal Car Rental...know us and our property. This past summer we rented a car for just over 3 months. A security deposit was taken on a CC. During the period we hade the car I paid them every couple of weeks in cash. The cars we received were not in really good condition. At the end of our stay I stopped at their office to pay off the balance before departing. I was advised all was looked after. During the period I had the car, I made payments in cash and they noted the payment on the rental contract. The more payments the less legible it became.

Upon our return home we had assumed all was OK. Upon trying to use our CC we were declined. A call to the CC Company showed that Royal had processed a large payment in excess of $800 more than was owed. We have been unable to resolve this with the CC Comany and Royal emailed a statement that did not show all the cash payments we had made.

The purpose of this post is to warn those renting to read the contracts fine print and get a seperate receipt for each and every payment.

After 7+ years and many rentals........so long Royal!!!!!!!

    holy cow.
you have now been home for 2 months and royal should have resolved this!

here's hoping that it is resolved soon .

frustrating and angering i am sure that they are denying "cash received" even though they notated it on the contract as receipt.

if anything, folks need to learn by this.

sorry to hear of your frustrations with this company.

i hate to hear of these kind of situations.

royal needs to step up and be accountable.
they owe you and future and present customers honesty.

What credit card company are you dealing with? Every time I have had a dipute with a vendor - it is immediately wiped from my bill and the CC company deals with clearing it up.

No offense but you should consider using credit cards and not carrying so much cash. The CC company has safeguards in place to protect you from this kind of stuff.

    To clarify

Andy, when you live on the island for long periods of time, credit cards do not always make sense. Many of us use cash on adaily basis. Wheteher it is cash or CC this does not excuse their behaviour.

    Aquaman,
I am sorry to say that I too had a bad experience with Royal after many years of loyal service. Luckily, it did not amount to as much money as you. I actually wrote about it in May 2009.

In summary (of a very long story), the company was to reimburse us of some additional money charged incorrectly. I waited over a week in Aruba for this to happen and then numerous emails afterwards. Its 2012 and never heard from them and never got the issue rectified. We travel to Aruba twice a year and they no longer have my business!

What I have found is that the power of this BB is great. Bad comments from us, does actually hold weight. Perhaps, someone from this BB might "tip them off"?

yes indeed, someone should send them the link to this thread.
there are some businesses that follow this kind of a forum to monitor what is said about their business.

    Your experience

    Randi

At the time you were using the, they had different staff. You may recall a person called Ardley. After he was fired by them, things went down hill. I should also mention that we referred some friends to them a year ago and they too got ripped off. When settling the account our friends pointed out a discrepancy between what they reserved and what they were charged. The guy, Steve, shrugged it off and said they should have seen the error when they picked up the car. No attempt to fix the error.

Also, I would really like to know the trick that Royal use to put peoples credit cards over there limit. They did it to us and I am aware of others who have had this done

I agree there is no excuse for this behavior.

I'm not suggesting you use a CC everywhere you go. Certain transactions, such as this one, are tailor made for a CC. A long-term txn. involving multiple payments and a lot of money. The CC gives you records that cannot be disputed. The danger of a cash txn. is the lack of reliable records. Also, using a CC for the entire txn. often gives you extra insurance coverage.
