What is up with Aruba? no one will visit the casinos if you have to pay to park. crime is up. in one week that we know of, not sure about what we don't know of, i can say i know of two robberies, one murder & one attempted murder. Geez, I'd hate to get to the point that going to Aruba is no longer carefree but has become an ordeal.

I respectfully disagree about the high rise casinos. I don't see them suffering as a result of paid parking because they are easily walkable for many tourists and nearby neighborhoods, as well as convenient stops on the bus route. If it becomes an issue they may start validating parking for players.

I see a bigger hit to the rental car companies. If parking becomes more of a pain, rentals could be impacted. This would be counterproductive since rental taxes will not be made up by parking fees I'm sure. Now this may not be a consideration for those who stay outside if major hotel areas on Palm and Eagle, but tourists staying in hotel areas may be less likely to rent.
Not sure when, but we will be back

A 30% drop in retail sales? I wonder where she's getting that statistic from. Given the challenges of tracking that information period-over-period and Aruba's less-than-stellar government technology infrastructure, I'm skeptical about the source of that statistic as a data-driven metric versus anecdotal "here's what I'm hearing" version being reported.

what I'd like to know is where they would have paid parking in high rise area? there already is paid parking by the Palm Beach Mall. And you can't park on the street of the high rise strip. There are no real side streets in high rise area. So where are they going to have paid parking. There is a parking lot sort of by the Dunkin Donuts there that you pay. I'm not sure where it would be? Where would they put these "paid" parking meter spots.

So far, I have not seen any details regarding parking in Palm Beach area. If I see some, I'll post it here.

There is only an article from last year August, where Palm Beach parking was mentioned. They had originally planned to do it in Jan 2015. Here is the excerpt from the article:

E fecha stipula pa duna inicio na e proyecto aki dia 1 di december 2014, unda cu e implementacion di e "parkeermeters" lo mester cuminsa den centro di ciudad y por logra pa januari 2015 implementa esaki den area di Palm Beach pa esaki por ta den funcion.

What does this mean? CK1, as much as I appreciate some of the research you do, I'd be even more impressed if it was presented in English. Parking is free at Holiday Inn and the Marriott campus for guests. It looks like the next ripoff, I mean extortion, I mean issue in Aruba will be paid parking. Time to give up the rental car and take the bus or a cab. So sad the island is taking this approach to generating revenue.

Walt, as I stated in my post, there are no details available right now, as far as I know. The excerpt I posted is from August last year, indicating that there are plans for paid parking in Palm Beach.

I thought it's an indicator from some official source. And that's the reason I posted it. "Bati Bleki" is Papiamento and means "Gossip". Rona Coster makes it clear that the column is a gossip site. Regarding the above article, she even started out on her FB with the words: "Looking into my crystal ball, I predict:"
