I have been both a business and personal customer of RBC in Canada since 1972. Over the years their service has been good and service quality has increased. Sadly, this is not the case in Aruba. RBC in Aruba is the result of the takeover of RBTT (Royal Bank Trinidad and Tobago) which was plagued with problems. I suspect that the same culture has held over. In my belief the only way RBC Aruba can be improved is to have a customer service team from Canada visit and clean house and implement new procedures.

This is the number to call RBC in Canada to get action.

This is the extension of Jacqueline; the woman who got after RBC and got them to pay attention to me.

Her extension is actually Manatoba phone number to call her directly. However long distance charges apply if you do it that way. She is there into the evenings , if you are on the east coast USA.

This is terrible. I feel bad for all who have to do business with them.

I guess RBC is Canada and Aruba’s equivalent to the USA Wells Fargo. With Bank of America running a close 2 nd.

what are the banking choices on island ?

Andrea, there is some choice, but not great

There is Arubabank. Monthly account charge differs depending if you have a florin or US Dollar account. The Dollar account is more expensive. The bank fees on transactions are high

CMB seems OK. There ATM Usage fee is less than the other banks.

Banco Caribe. Seems more geared toward loans, mortgages, investments with a less dominant retail ( personal) banking operation. Not so widespread as the other banks

CIBC ( Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) A recent entry onto the Island. Opened a branch in Ponton area. The only bank offering a no fee option for account holders over 60 yrs age) CIBC has been a dominant bank on other Caribbean islands for many years. It is a bank that has had an interesting history including one event that required them to audit and tighten their internal systems some years ago. A branch manager in Toronto had a gambling addiction. He convinced the casinos in Las Vegas he was independently wealthy. He finished the day banking and on various nights the casinos sent a private plane to Toronto to fly him to Las Vegas. He lost millions of the banks money before he was caught. There was a film made about this 2-3 years ago.

CIBC negotiated an interesting deal and arrangement to get a license to operate in Aruba. It is all above board and very innovative.

There are other non-bank ways to transfer or handle money here for those without accounts. They include:

    Western Union
    Union Caribe

Hope this answers your question Andrea

I don't think it's cost effective to use Western Union.

    What's wrong with Wells Fargo?

I have them and although they aren't perfect, they are 100x better than RBC in Aruba.
