Re: Arikok National Park
Sue,
The grounds of Arikok park as as close to sacred as we have on the island. It is not set up to handle 4X4 vehicles, with the exception of the designated roads.
When the park was first worked out and in the planning stages, I rmember talk about people walking and hiking through it. I (for one) never thought that the searing heat and craggy walk ways would invite hiking. It seems that for the first years I was right. Now I am pleased to be wrong. Families go for half or full day hikes and carry light snacks with refuse sacks. It is no surprise to see people with tri or mono-pods with cameras mounted and waiting for some elusive critter or bird to get into their frames. It is a lovely place that sets a tone of historic peacefulness. Something that tends to soothe the soul - even in the heat.
Go and enjoy it on foot.
