Re: arrive 12/29 - 1/5
Ray,
There are many things going on. Some of them directly attached wto the holidays and others enhanced by them. Let me give you my scoop on things - aside from the fiereworks, which I will mention shortly in a seperate post.
This is from the heart.
CHURCHES
If you are Catholic, check out the different services. Especially in the larger churches like the one in Noord. Effectionately known as Santa Ana or Misa Di Noord. I have seen Those from all faiths and those without be inspired by that place. Each in his own way and for their own reasons.
RESTAURANTS
Restaurants that are fun is what I look for. There is that universal tendancy amongst the restaurants to compete for bodies and offer stuff like the little cones on the head and a whistle or horn. That is a given, there has to be someting else. For me that "something else is FUN with music that is typical of the geography where I am at. I also look for restaurants or clubs that have easy pick-up and drop off for taxis. New Years eve (a time to toast anything and everything) the taxi is good advise - even if you have a rented car. It is a wise man that walks out the restaurant door, looks at his rental car, checks his personal alchohol barometer and then calls a taxi if needed.
PLACES TO SEE FIREWORKS:
There are some great spots. If you have your acttivities planned inside a hotel or resort, find out if they will have a viewing floor or some other access to see the fireworks. Many resorts do. If you are a bit more adventurous, enquire about the different water-tank-locations and check them out but get there early. By the way if you are wondering what that is, water tank locations are smaller hills (mounds actually) where the various district water tanks are located to maintain water preasure. They have great access roads and normally have parking all around them. This once a year, they take on a personality all on their own and become a meeting place for all sort of folks. Kind of nice actually.
FIREWORKS
Last retail day of the year, the various sompanies light firecrackers on the streets. This is an outrageously different and fun event to witness and one that (if your ears can take it) you sould not miss. My humble recommendation is to take ear plugs for the noise, thick and good sunglasses to protect agains flying bits of paper and a few hankerchieves to cover the face when the smoke gets heavy. If you have a video camera without the self adjusting sound recorder, I then recommend that you cover the mich hole with a bit of cotten (not much). If you don't the sound just turns into a long loud hum. Guess how I found that one out. Yep, happened to me.
There are other things to do, but we can cover all that stuff in future postings.
