    Hey Maddog,

    You've summed it up perfectly.

Very few places in the world I've been to, and I've been to quite a few, have matched their descriptions in the brochures as closely as Aruba has.

Aruba was recommended to me by a saleman for the British pharmaceutical company Beechams. That was back in 1976. When I finally made my first visit in 1980, everything he had said about Aruba was true. So; sometimes you can believe guys that sell drugs.

In 1980, Aruba had wonderful weather, great beaches, warm water, good restaurants, lively clubs & casinos, good shopping and it was safe, clean, stable and well run.

More than 30 years later, has any of that really changed?

Yep, I remember. At that time, we were staying at the Aruba Palm Beach Resort & Casino every year - which was later renamed the Aruba Grand - and is now the Riu.

speaking of the Aruba Grand (now riu)

i loved it so much when it was the "grand", had a nice quiet beach area and a nice large pool where i could swim real laps.

    remember............Vincent the "limbo dancer" ?

he had been injured severely in a car wreck in 1999 or 2000.
we visited him in the hospital and brought a "care pkg" to him from his family that could not get down to visit with him in the hospital.

I remember him from the old "Aruba Grand", too. But you can still see Vincent anytime - he's a bartender at Amsterdam Manor. He'll shake up a drink for you but, alas, no more limbo dancing.

Yes, I remember when the high-rise area consisted of The Americana, the Concord, the Holiday Inn and the Aruba Caribbean. That was when I made my first trip to Aruba in 1980.

The biggest building in the area at the time was the hospital.
