Thumbs down BBO is going up 1% to 2.5% soon. . . .

    Hi kids,

Just saw it on the 15 for 15 news with Yentel that the bbo here in Aruba is going up 1% to 2.5% to cover the increase in AZV (health insurance) expenses. That means "everything" you buy here will be taxed at 2.5% very soon. . . . Government here must be taking lessons from the US. . . Short of money, don't look to cut expenses, raise taxes. . . . . Are they tax and spend Democrats here? ? ? ?

I'm not saying I agree with a tax increase, but at least it doesn't appear to be aimed at strictly tourists to cover local health insurance. Current tax where I am: sales tax 5%, restaurant tax 11%, etc, etc...

The tax in Germany for most goods and services is 19%!

It's called VAT (value-added tax) and must be already included in the final price.

OK we don't like tax, but did everyone cheer when the present Govt was first elected several years ago and cut the then BBO tax in half?? After this increase it is still not back to what it was. It is annoying though

I think it was 3% then everyone complained so they cut it in half, now its going up again? Still cheaper than in the States.

Hey people. . . Yes, 2.5% is cheaper than in a lot other places, but remember one thing, the locals down here DO NOT make anywhere near the money that you make in other countries. A 1% tax hike is going to be hard on a lot of the locals. This tax increase is on everything. . . Someone here on a vacation is not going to even notice the increase, but if you live and work, you will feel it every time you purchase something for the family. . . You can not compare the tax rate to somewhere else that has much higher wages to the living expenses and wages of the locals here. . . . .
