Being Approached and pestered?!

Hi all, please excuse my ignorance i dont wish to offend but have a question!?

If we are to walk downtown (is downtown oranjestad by the way?!) are we likely to get approached by locals asking for money, or selling goods or children asking for sweets etc?!?!

I dont mean to offend by asking as i am unsure of what Aruba is like , having only really been to Havana in Cuba, where we were followed by children wanting money and sweets, ladies taking thier photos with us and asking for money etc im not sure if this is usual in other caribbean countries?!

I am aware Cuba is a poor island and developing but i have never heard of this is in Aruba?!

Again sorry if this sounds wrong i dont wish to offenend just want to know what to expect!

many thanks
!

Having been to Aruba a few times and "downtown" also.I have never had happen to me what you described. My wife and I have experienced a young man asking for a cigarette and only 2-3 times someone asking if we wanted to buy marijuana.Other then that that's it.Those things happen right here in New Jersey too so it didn't take me back seeing it first hand.

what you are referring to is not commonplace in aruba.
never been to havana but some of the other countries in the caribbean that i have visited i have seen it. the worst imo was in dominincan republic and in martinique.

Thumbs up

Never ever!

>>> "only 2-3 times someone asking if we wanted to buy marijuana."
----- Again never ever! But think this might be an age thing. Have to be younger than I. My son was asked once.

The only thing I have seen downtown is people trying to give you
fliers for stores. I think there is going to be a crack down on that soon
too.

Thats fab, thanks for all your replies!
It was a bit shocking for my partner having had never seen anything like it before (we are from UK).

Yea i expect the odd person or too but things like in Havana was a bit full on!

Glad it should be ok tho

This past March, for the first time ever in 9 trips, we were approached by a panhandler on one of the back streets in Oranjestad. He simply asked for 'spare change for a homeless man'. Did not pester after we declined. As I said, first time experience on Aruba.

In November you might find me downtown staggering around asking people to buy me a Balashi but that's about it.

You will be fine walking around without people pestering you!

Downtown hawkers, etc.

First two times downtown we were approached, of course, by timeshare sales workers (those that get $$ for the people who show up for tours who have taken a flyer from them.

Like everyone here says, it may be a sign of the times.

Well arrive in Aruba tomorrow, Easter Sunday, I have been approached in regards to timeshares and I just keep walking stating...."Thanks I already own many weeks on the island" and the man that is in the parking lot at night across from the Crystal Casino.......He has been there for years and he will ask for 1.00 to watch your car.....We laugh and tell him if he takes extra care watching our car we'll give him more when we return......and we always do..
Can't wait and will be there for 1 month.... Happy Easter Happy Passover Week Happy Spring
