Best place to buy Florins for the best exchange rate?

It seems like sometimes, depending on the situation, you get jipped when paying for things in U.S. Dollars in Aruba. To avoid or minimize this, I would like to pay for things in Florins. Where is the best location to exchange Dollars to get the full 1.78 to 1 exchange rate?

Certain restaurants I went in to had the prices in Dollars and Florins and you got a better deal when paying in Florins. 3-10%.

Wow, I have never noticed a difference like you are mentioning....are you sure your not talking about the extra percentage some restaurants charge as a gratuitity??? What restaurants have you had this happen to you ??? I will be going in November and will check it out.

You will always pay more when paying in Florins. The restaurants and stores are charging you a % for accepting Dollars.

If you spend a couple grand in Aruba, it adds up.

That and I've noticed that many places jip you when giving change back in Florins. The bus driver did it to me twice as well as a few of the Chinese Grocery Stores. When I questioned the change given to me in the grocery stores, they then gave me the proper change. I think most tourists don't question it and get cheated. I'd like to think that they aren't adding correctly and not doing it on purpose.

I don't like being cheated, on principle, even if the amount is small.

in the 6+ years that this forum has been in existence, to the best of my memory no one had ever claimed "foul" of being cheated.
before you purchase anything.....why not ask what rate they are using before giving the your business? 1.76, 1.77, 1.78 per $1 (US dollar)
    or
when you arrive on island, why not exchange your US dollars into aruba florins?

in the 30+ times that we have visited aruba, and spent US dollars, never once was i cheated/jipped.
even at the casino when losing.

to the best of my memory, this is a topic that has never been an issue.

it seems to me some of the topics that you are addressing are better answered by an aruban banker, a aruban realtor, an aruban recycle/trash person.

respectfully, you need to hook up with some or all of the people that i just mentioned and also but certainly not least, other american homeowners that have experienced some of the issues/concerns that you have.

this forum is primarily for tourists that wish to visit aruba.
we can only provide so much info, but you are owed better info and more 1st hand info.

the "moving to aruba" category may be the category for you to visit and to read as much as you can.

you may find a forum member or 2 or 3 there in that category that may be able to mentor you, answer some questions that we cannot.

i would love to be able to say we here in the general forum can help.........but we cannot be all things, as much as we try.

I definitely was shorted on the bus and both times they claimed they didn't have the correct change.
The Chinese Grocery Stores significantly shorted me on change, above and beyond a few percentage points.

That's what I'm going to do in the future to avoid any confusion.

Perhaps you were and didn't realize it?

I posted in the general forum because I thought it was the appropriate place. I apologize if it wasn't. I thought moving to Aruba forum was for things related only to moving to Aruba.

if you go to the "moving to aruba" ( i wish it also had a category as Living in Aruba) category and scroll thru the many threads you will see tons of various subjects.

so the bus driver did not have the correct change. seriously?! here in my town if you do not have the correct change, you don't ride. no change is made by the driver. correct change or a bus pass or hoof it on one's own

sure, i would consider that maybe an aruban merchant made an extra .02 or maybe i made an extra .02. no big deal in the scheme of things.

again i encourage you to find some professional assistance/advice re: some of the subjects that you have brought up.
    you deserve correct answers.

I'm not saying the bus drivers did it on purpose. Also you are right about having correct change. However, I asked before I got on the bus and was told that the drivers make change.

The grocery stores I were referring to were the smaller Chinese ones; not the Supercenter.

In those cases, I feel that math errors were being made figuring out the correct change. The cashiers did the math in their head. Only when I questioned the change given, they checked using a calculator. The Supercenter and other establishments where the register or pos does the math for them, always gives the correct change.

The Asian Cashiers in the smaller Chinese Grocery Stores don't even speak English.
I had to communicate with them in Spanish. I traveled to many places where most(American) tourists don't go. The Columbian Restaurant I ate lunch at gives a significantly better deal for using Florins. I brought home one of their take out menus.

Like you suggested, I'm just going to use Florins for now on to make the math simpler.
