Bringing Dog To Aruba for Vacation

    Hi there,
Saw a previous thread about getting a dog to Aruba from someone moving there, but I'm interested if anyone has traveled their with their dog for vacation. I'll be leaving in 142 days and am bringing my pit mix with me.

Airline is all set, hotel is also dog friendly.

My biggest concern is getting through customs. I have been told by a few people they've never even been asked for a health certificate when getting through the airport. Has anyone ever had a problem entering or exiting Aruba and coming back to the states? I know what the requirements are, just want to make sure all of my ducks are in a row and hear of any experiences!

Also, any idea if their are laws against "pits"? I follow a lot of the rescues and have visited the animal shelter there in Aruba, seems like there are a lot of pit mixes on the island so I'm hoping that won't be an issue

    Thanks!

There are a Lot of mixes on the island..... genuine aruba conucu dogs.
The health certificate must be recent for arrival and departure.
Aquaman and his bride had an issue last Oct or Nov. It was unfortunate and upsetting for everyone involved.

Is is your dog a service dog or a pet?

I look forward to reading responses.

I believe the Bucuti allows small dogs. You have to make arrangement in advance. If there are any issues with other guests, they will ask you to make other arrangements. My feeling is, as much as I love my dog, and as much as I miss her when we go on vacation. I wouldn't want to put her on a plane as I think it would just be too stressful.

Yes indeed Andrea we had major problems as you are aware.

Firstly to answer the question about pet friendly hotels...in the past couple of months the Hyatt has gone pet friendly. I believe it is restricted to the 1st floor.

secondly...CRDAVIES will need all vaccinations up to date PLUS a recent Vet letter detailing an inspection and stating the dog is in good health and everything is fine. Now, that is what we have used for the last 5 years. In October we found out that Aruba changed the rules. They have not put these new rules on any website so far. In summary CRDAVIES will need to fax or scan her vet documents to an Aruba vet in advance of arriving. The Customs folks now have the authority to seize the animal and quarantine it until inspected by the Govt appointed vet. They explained to me that this situation came about due to a Dutch couple who imported some nasty and diseased dogs. Don't know if that's true or not.

CRDAVIES. the vet you need to send the paperwork to is Dr Berendson. His clinic us in Wayaca. I suggest you send a letter explaining you are bringing your dog. According to Aruba Customs he will inspect the paperwork and apply a stamp

Good luck because I can vouch that the Aruba Customs people who dealt with us were nasty and confrontational. At one point we had 5 guys who were giving us a hard time. There were personal insults about how "we Americans" made it so tough for Arubans visiting the States etc. I certainly advised them I was not an American. They detained me for over 2 hours while they found a vet to check the papers we had. The vet they found gave the Customs guys sh*t as all our papers were in order.

Now please bear in mind. 5+years with this particular dog and 8 years with the cat. Never had a problem before. CRDAVIES you may be fine and walk right in. But, this was our recent experience.

There is more to this but I think what I have written will give you a good feel for what it is like

one is good for 3 years. If I remember that is the Rabies one. The letter of good health needs to be recent. I believe 60-90 days.

i forgot to mention that even though we had all the correct vet papers and papers issued by the Canadian Government for taking the animals out of and back into the country, the Customs people disregarded them as well.

To to add insult to injury, after being detained for over 2 hours during which time we were under guard by 3 Customs guys to make sure we didn't run off, they arranged for the vet to see the animals. During that time, they photographed all the papers and made several phone calls. All this time people were picking up baggage and walking straight through without any interaction with Customs. (I wonder how much illegal stuff walked through)

when it was finally decided to have the vet look at the papers and animals, I was escorted to a customs vehicle. Before driving to the vet, I was required to pay them in cash for the cost of the drive.

Because I was detained, I was accompanied every step I took.

Oh yes. A nice friendly welcome to Aruba.

After this was all over, I spoke to the head guy. He as much admitted they had toughened up on bringing in pets. Seems an upper management decree required this at the time

Hmmm we always thought about bringing our dog before this thread. Seems like its hit or miss as to what you encounter. Just a note to crdavies. We love dogs but remember, Aruba island dogs run run freely on beach. One last year that came to us for a dog treat and it had some fleas on her.Be careful.
