Last year we got international service (at&t) We could use the phone but our bill ended up being over $300.00. We rented this year through Discount Cell so I hope all goes well with them. At least you pay up front for the number of minutes.
Wish I were there now. LOL

i'll chime in and agree with others who have the international plan added to their "current" phone or those whose service automatically transfers from zone to zone - we use ATT, T-Mobile and have used Sprint - also, Skype is very big and FREE as long as it's user to user

You could try buying a phone card while there, I know they aren't too expensive...

Don't you have to have an unlocked cell phone? I have a Blackberry that I don't use anymore but it is programmed to Sprint. I am guessing I would have to unlock the blackberry and then buy a SIM card down in Aruba to use???

I am trying to debate between just buying a phone once we are there finally. We have been renting cell phones for years! We go twice a year so I figure it would pay for itself by the 2nd or 3rd trip.

    Thoughts?....

    you are right on track
probably 2 visits for a phone to pay for itself vs. rental.

check with your wireless provider to see if your phone is unlocked. (or someone knowledgeable about phones).
i think my blackberry is a locked device.
if it is unlocked then that would eliminate your need for an aruba cell phone.
all you would need is the SIM card.

I use the SIM from Aruba Fast Phones. Last year it was $20 for 84 minutes but it looks like they changed their plans. I keep the unlock code with me and just activate it myself.

I had my AT&T phone unlocked several years ago ...actually when they were Cingular...I take it with me when we go to Aruba and buy a Sim card at the airport.

I doubt At&T or Apple would allow IPhones to be unlocked however we recently went to Cancun with ours and I loaded the Skype app and put $10 in my account for pay as you go..I was able to call the US as well as text and I only spent $2.00 over the course of the week. Skype works over the internet so a wifi connection is needed but there is no need to carry a laptop since you can check your email and search the web from you IPhone as well....just be sure to put phone into airplane mode and disable 3G...had no AT&T charges when we returned.

You can get an unlocked GSM phone for under $50 - I have purchased several of them over the last few years and never had a problem using Aruban SIM cards in them.

I have a question into aruba discount cell, but thought I would ask the group:

I have a BlackBerry Storm 1 and a Storm 2 through verizon. Can I get them a different SIM card or ?? from a rental place for activity, minutes and data?

    Any info appreciated.

Two days and counting!! Surf Club, here we come!
    Next Aruba trip in
