Cell phone rental, or download a app on phone?

How are you making phone calls to the US from Aruba?

We don't call home from Aruba very much at all. However, our daughter rents a cell phone loaded with minutes when she arrives. It's adequate for her calls home to check on her kids (college age) for a week.

we have an aruba cell phone and load in some time when we arrive.
we use this cell phone for local calls and for incoming calls.

we mostly use skype or facetime for calling our son/dil and our dog/cat sitter.

I downloaded the Magic Jack app. Phone calls are free to the U.S. and Canada when you are on wi-fi. Works great.

For when we travel outside of the US I purchased a cheap unlocked Nokia phone from Walmart.com and avoid the outrageous Verizon rates by purchasing a local sim card.

I also downloaded the free magic jack app. Called my kids every day and the calls are so clear! I wish I had known about this years earlier, I would have saved a lot of $ in sims cards!

The other person does not have to have the app also. I can't stress to you how easy this app is to use. If it were the slightest bit difficult, I couldn't use it!
