Re: Cell phones
Hi Dee,
Let me start off by saying that I own a cell phone rental company, however would like to give you some unbiased choices.
You can go to your ATT representative and ask if he can hook you up with an internatinal roaming line that would work on Aruba with either SETAR or DIGICEL. If he can, you would be able to roam while here on an average cost of $1.80 for both incomming and outgoing calls. I add that 8 times out of 10 even when your rep. told you it would work, it simply doesn't. Not to say that there haven't been good experiences, but that is the average.
You can also bring a cell phone of your own. It would have to be unlocked and be a GSM tri-band unit. Some quad's work but due to their advanced technologie, they sometimes don't. If you did bring a tri-band that had the SIM lock removed, you could then buy a SIM card from us at the airport and you would be up and running. The cost is Afl. 50 of which Afl. 35 is airtime. The conversion from Afl to USD is 1 USD equals Afl's 1.77.
You could use a calling card. This would require you to go to a lobby or room phone to make your calls. Should you use a room phone, there is a connection fee that runs between $2.00 and as high as $5.00. The disadvantage of a calling card is that it dowes not make you available during an emergency back home - either in bussiness or on the domestic scene. It depends on when you call. Again, this dissadvantage could be viewed as an advantage.
There are various calling houses where you can go to make calls. These houses often use either SETAR VENTAJA or DIGICEL cards as the basis for the call rates. The inconvenience (if so applicable ) is the same as that of a calling card. Namely - you cannot receive calls, only make them, and as I said, this could be viewed as an advantage or dissatvantage.
We rent phones and our rates are $8 p/day for the first 5 days and $5 per day for all days following. The calls to the USA and Canada are 19.5 cents per minute with no charge on incomming calls. You pick up and drop off your your phone at the airport when arriving and leaving. Look at our web site. It is listed under my signed name below.
I hope to have given you an unbiased answer.
