Currency

I am traveling to Aruba in a week and am wondering what the best method is for paying for cabs, dinner, etc. in Aruba. Is it Traveler's Checks, Credit Card, Cash, etc.? Wanting some advice from people who have been there. Don't want to count on ATM and Credit Cards and be SOL when I get there.

Re: Currency

Forget travellers checks, not worth the hassle. You can pay with credit cards everywhere....there are ATM's all over and they accept US$ everywhere. We went in the middle of May and took a few hundred in cash and used credit card for everything else.
Have a wonderful time, it's a great island.

Re: Currency

OK Doug,

Yes, I would suggest cash man for cabs as not much else will work. Dinner- CC. Other "stuff" CC also. Despite what the commercial says, leave the cashiers checks american express or otherwise AT HOME, as you will not need them. Cash & CC only BTW easy on the cash.

Wish I was going w/ you. Have fun!

Re: Currency

Doug,
All sorts of advise on this will come - I am sure of that. One good way to approach it is to calculate what you are budgeting for yourself and then bring between 30% to 45% of that in cash and make sure your credit cards can handle the rest.

Like I said, formulas will abound - looki at them and see if you can combine thoughts and make the one that is best one for you

Re: Currency

We use travelers checks and credit cards when we travel to the island. Take enough cash for small items, cabs, tipping, etc. American money is accepted all over the island.

Re: Currency

Everybody accepts the American dollar, although you will usually get change back in Aruban currency. All prices are marked in both currencies, so you won't have any problem trying to figure out the exchange rate, etc. have a great time....been there twice last year and looking forward to leaving July 28 for 10 days of fun in the sun!!

Re: Currency

When we first went to Aruba we took cash, travelers checks and credit cards. You know, just in case. After coming home with the travelers checks several years because we thought we should have they to prevent problems we decided to take cash for our gambling and the small things we might have coming and going such as porters and valet tips, cabs, tee shirts, things you might grab at the airport etc. Hotel, dinners, shopping etc. go on our American Express. We've never had a problem using our credit card. They are widely accepted in Aruba. I will say that the reason we use American Express is that they have always done the exchange for the best possible rate available at the time. Aruba may not be a problem with exchange but other destinations have been so we have just got in the habit of using what we are comfortable with. Don't forget to use the safe in your hotel. You program them with your choice of code so they are safe. That will prevent you from having alot of cash on your person at any one time. Enjoy your vacation. I know you will enjoy Aruba.
