the DANGER of umbrellas at the Beach

This photo is from Aruba Curt.
Thank you Curt for allowing me to share here.

It is so important to be AWARE and ALERT that if you are sitting near these kind of shade covering.........you could be injured, badly.

The winds in Aruba are NOT umbrella friendly.

Fixed palapas on the beach are a safer alternative.

Andrea, you are so right. I know on beaches like Arashi they are expensive to rent (if you don't have a palapa). but they are made specifically for places like Aruba and they are very expensive. regular umbrellas on the beaches of Aruba are missiles. That's why I have no problem sharing our palapa (we always get there early to get one). Some people ask if they can share the shade on the actual beach, not even the table part. I say of course. There are umbrellas made specifically for wind but they are big and heavy and expensive.

The umbrella in that picture was a rental umbrella. But yes, the rental are general safer than the small purchased ones. Last year a woman in VA Beach was killed by one of the cheap versions.

Getting up early for shade or paying the higher cost is a small price to pay for safety.

I once had a lawn chair attack me at a July 4th party I was attending in Dothan, Alabama.

Oh no... wait... I fell on it because of too many Alabama Slammers. I still think the chair was involved somehow but was never able to prove it. <<Law and Order music>>

Always nice to see the hometown in the papers... People learn to respect the water, mostly the hard way. I guess folks should respect the wind too...

That umbrella snapped maybe 10 feet away from where I was sitting. Scared the crap out of me! The people sitting behind us also had one that was bending really bad but when the first one snapped the woman sitting under the one behind us grabbed it and it countered the bend. Had that one snapped it was headed straight for me.

The wind has been unusually bad the past few days. At the Surf Club beach (not sure where the above umbrella was from) there are a few umbrella vendors now. We have used Monty for years and his umbrellas are metal posts, not sure what the other vendors have.
