Divi Divi Tree???

Anyone have any updates on the current state of the Divi Divi Tree by the Amsterdam Manor that was chain sawed last month?

Re: Divi Divi Tree???

Sure do!
it is held up with a scaffolding as a brace and there is a patch around the damaged area. I hope it is able to recover.

At present, that lovely symbol of our island look a bit like a patient that just had leg surgery with all the hospital parafinalie (spelling?) holding up an injured leg.

By the way, here is a quiz: The tree is actually not a DIVI tree. It is a tree that is common to mangroves. Know the name?

Re: Divi Divi Tree???

The Dividivi in front of Amsterdam Manor:
=========================================

Tomorrow, Friday March 18th, is a national holiday. The dividivi tree, considered one of the national embleems, is on a lot of T-Shirts used by the locals on this festive day. The tree itself was not chain sawed but one of the two mayor branches was severed with a prunning handsaw. They cut through the middle on Carnaval's Sunday, before sun arising. Probably somebody stopped the barbaric act before completed.

Maybe some drunken ignorant wanted to use this tree branch as a decoration on his carnaval trailer.

An other theory is that taxidrivers and souvenirsellers on the spot could not tolerate one and the other (a photo opt spot) so the tree was victim to progress.

By the way it is not a Dividivi but a Fofoti tree. This is a mangrove plant.
Years ago abundant on the island of Aruba.

BigPapa was so concerned about the distruction that he realised an act of reconcilation by planting a Tamarinde (Tammy) tree on a schoolyard. There was also a donation of ten small Kwihi trees (an other local popular tree) to the school.
They are going to use them as shade for the students in front of the school. For the locals there is too much sunshine, you may distinguise between locals and non-locals by the use of the shadow side of the streets versus the sunny side.

Excuse me my errors, this board is for me a training area to better my use of your language. Sort of hands on training.

The rescue of the severed tree is sponsered by two big local companies. It looks like there tree docters acomplished the almost impossible task of giving the mutilated branch live again. There are plenty of new leaves on this part of the tree. We are crossing our fingers that this is not a final revival before total colapse.

If you want to read more about this particular incident search this board using the words DIVIDIVI, FOFOTI, BIGPAPA, CHARLES or some more according to YOUR proper inspiration.

Wito.

Re: Divi Divi Tree???

Wito,
I really have to give you credit. You apologized for your "bad English". However, you very eloquently expressed yourself. You should not feel embarrassed in any way.
If I was to move to another country, and be forced to speak their language, I would not be able to do such a beautiful job. I studied the Spanish language in school for about six years. I probably could not function in a Spanish kindergarten class with my knowledge of the Spanish language.
Keep posting on this site. I love reading your comments.

Re: Divi Divi Tree???

Mike,
It is a Fofoti tree. Tough question and I am willing to bet that a large percentage of Aruban persons do not know the answer.

Howard,
Not at all, love to see WITO post and enjoy his in depth research on topics.
