Dollar versus Aruban Currency

Hi- We are leaving for our honeymoon tomorrow and I have read here that you can use US dollars in Aruba. Do you lose out by doing that? Is it better to get money from the ATM in Aruba? I know with most countries, you pay much more to use dollars, but if this isn't the case then we'll use cash.

Also, it seems like credit is widely accepted. Is that true?

Thanks! You guys are great. I've been lurking and reading a lot.

Jenny

(leaving tomorrow!)

U.S. dollar is accepted everwhere in Aruba. Some credit cards (including ours as of Feb. this year) are charging a foreign transaction fee, even though the charges are in U.S. dollar.

Will I get charged just as much to exchange currency at a bank or atm as I would if we just use dollars?

Yes, my husband's card charges a fee now. I don't think mine does, but I guess I should look!

Thanks to you both!

Most all business use the same exchange rate. !.75 AFL = $1.00

The ATM machines do give U.S. dollar at this exchange rate.

Most places, including resturaunts, have a price in florins and US dollars. So the answer to your question is no, you do not lose anything without converting. I use cash and travlers checks. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the head's up! I checked my credit card and they charge 3%! Yikes. We like to get points at home, but at that rate, I will pass .

The 1.75 to 1.00 ratio has been constant for a very long time.
