False $5 Florin Coins

Apparently according to the AWE24 web site there are False $5 Florin coins circulating in Aruba.

They look like worn coins but are lighter and will not work in vending machines.

That's not good! We saw our first $5 florin this time in Aruba. We were going to save it but we bought breakfast instead.

i had no idea that the square coin was out of circulation. i always would bring a bunch back from aruba and distribute them as "prizes" to my swim lesson kids.

those darn square coins were very much a part of aruba's uniqueness.

the year before last our friend from the island told us that they were not using them anymore and to keep it as a souvenoir....so I just assumed they were all out of circulation.....
I have only seen the round ones now and am sure I did not see any of them last year....anyone out there see any lately?????

The 50 cent coin is square. We talked about bringing a couple home for my nieces but I'm not so sure we did.

My MIL had a baggy full of coins from her years of traveling to Aruba. She tried to exchange them but some she had to take to the bank in Aruba because they were out of circulation.

i thought the square coins were all out of circulation? a few years back we brought home most of our loose aruban coins for that reason.

Was the $5 coin square at one time?

Yes, the 50cent coin is square and it is still in circulation. You need it to scratch your phone card. A round coin will not work.
