Unfortunately, that rule no longer applies. Doesn't matter if it's charged in Dollars now, most (but not all) credit cards are charging the foreign transaction fee now regardless of the currency it's charged in.

Our Citi Card charged us the extra and according to Capitol Ones website it still does not.

On our first trip (two couples, mid-fifties) we rented a car for our week's stay and enjoyed the freedom it gave us! We did go exploring in the "Outback" one day (the other couple is from Austalia), and had great fun getting a little lost and thankfully not stuck in the sand! This year we're renting a 4 X 4 to give ourselves more options to explore. Have fun -- you're going to want to go back! :-)
