    First Visit/Proposal

Hi. I am about to make my first Aruba visit and have a ton of questions. FIrst off I am going to propose and was wondering a good place to do it or a good restaurant for the occasion.

Secondly I was wondering how much money is necessary for a week. I spent alittle too much on the ring and need to budget the trip but also want to make it a very memorable one.

Thanks in advance for any help. I will be arriving next friday!!!

Jax, We are a family of 4 and spend on average 200-225.00 a day on food. That is Dunkin donuts or breakfast out, Subway or sandwhiches out, and a nice dinner.
A nice place to propose is a restuarant called Flying Fishbone. Very romantic and if you let them know in advance they can probably help you out. Others might suggest Passions on the beach. Goggle these and you can see pics of them. Flying Fishbone is in the water, bare feet, nice sunset at 5:30 ish. Reservations !!!!
GOod luck, you will love it.

i'm not that familiar with the island's intracies to give advice on proposal locations but i can tell you about the cost. for a one week stay, you're looking at least 1000 - that should cover food and a few activities - snorkeling, jeep tours. but in all honesty, you'll probably spend more. besides, it's your proposal! from what i can tell, ladies remember the proposal details more than the wedding itself and the ring of course.

best of luck and great choice in locale!!!

You couldn't have picked a better Island to 'pop the question'...that whole beach and sunset ambience is so romantic it will bold her over. As far as 'how much cash to bring', I must say I'm surprise how much its costing some folks to 'dine' out every day...ouch! But then again, one can get spoiled dinning 'IN'....you can't penny pinch on the proposal day as it got to be special and memoriable for both of you, but equally you won't have to 'break the bank' for the rest of your hols....Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice. I actually emailed the hyatt already but I figure its probably too short of notice. We will see.

As far as money i think I will be ok. I plan on raising about 1500 if I work everyday at my 2nd job until i go.

    Few other questions....
    1) Best excursions?? (wanna do a couple)
    2) Best beaches??

on my honeymoon 3 years ago, the conceirge desk had a special from de palm tours for 250 or so. it included:

    a) 1/2 day snorkel
    b) 1/2 day jeep tour + de palm island (more snorkeling)
    c) sunset sail
    d) sunset dinner/boat party afterward.

i believe the cost was about 40% discount to having booked them separately. although other options are available and may be better (i.e. jolly pirates for snorkeling is supposedly more youth oriented and exciting, abc jeep tours is cheaper than depalm, and converesely you can do it all yourself by renting a jeep, etc.....) the peace of mind of having book most of what there is to do on the island in one package was worth it. it helped free up our time for r&r.

Check out Jolly Pirates sail and The Jolly Pirate see if you get a better feel for JP's or Tranquilo.

For snorkeling on your own, rent a car for the day and go.
The website shorediving.comdoes just a fantastic job of describing and mapping out the different spots you are able to snorkel from. The title says "diving" but if you read the reviews of each "dive" spot, though the website is for "shore dives" there are many many comments about snorkeling these sites as well.

Some of my personal favs which you can get to via bus or car:
Catalina Cove (just north of Boca Catalina)
    Boca Catalina (shade palapas)
    Malmok Beach (rocky)

Another idea Horseback Riding On The Coast

We just had an excellent ATV tour with Kini Kini. I wrote all about it at http://www.aruba.com/forum/f7/advice-taking-atv-tours-32108/#post114691 If you have any questions, just let me know.

Your budget is strapped right now, but I also recommend the helicopter tour. From my trip report:
"Thursday morning was our helicopter tour of the island. There is only one operator on the island, Aruba Heli Tours. We decided to reserve the first tour of the day at 10 a.m. in order to have the rest of the day at the beach.

Christian was our pilot and tour guide. We felt it was well worth the extra money for the island tour versus the beach tour. The island tour begins at the helipad at the marina in Oranjestad. We headed north and saw Druif, Eagle, Palm Beach, Malmok, Arashi and beyond. We out over the wreck of the Antilla for a very unique view. From there it was on around the lighthouse and Tierra del Sol Country Club with all of it's palatial homes, flying along the northeast coast all the way up to the Aruba Drag Raceway Park.

Christian then took us back towards the west coast with a view of the refinery, heading back northward over the barrier islands towards to Oranjestad over Savaneta and past the airport, finally land back in Oranjestad. The color of the water during this portion of the flight was just as breathtaking as it is over Palm Beach.

Through 17 visits to Aruba, this ranks in the top 3 excursions we have taken. The other 2 being Tranquilo and the Kini Kini ATV tour."

Below is a photo taken during the helicopter tour. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge.
